OT - Handle for Bonney Hammer

I'm having a hell of a time coming up with a couple handles for some old Bonney body hammer heads I have. The Martin style handles aren't even close to filling up the head, and the handles that you would get from the hardware stores are just way too big to bother modifying.

Searched all over the internet and only come with the Martin replacement handles.

Anyone have a source for odd ball hammer handles for body hammers?

Here's one of the hammer heads and a pic of the opening. The opening measures just under 3/8" by 23/32" or so.

If I have to make one I have to make one, but I'd rather find one that works right out of gate if possible. Especially considering I need two of them.

Many decades ago I bought a handle like that from the tool truck that goes to auto shops. Problem is that I don't recall if it was Snap-on, mac, matco, or... But it can't hurt to try a tool truck if you see one stopped somewhere.

 

Good idea! There is a snap-on truck that I see stopped at a bike shop around the corner, every now and then. If I see him, I'll ask! Good one!

The short answer is you'll probably have to make one. Gone are the days when you could go up to the local hardware store and buy one Today, if you walk into a ''home improvement centre'' lookin for a handle they will probably ask '' why don't ya just buy a new hammer ?"
Another answer is to pirate on off a junk hammer, and adapt it to fit. I've built them from old ax handels ( well seasoned hickory ) and cut them down in a pinch. A month or two back I made one from the arm off a red oak chair, blanked it out with a jig saw did most of the shaping with a rasp, and sanded with 36, 80 & 180 paper. That one got a coat of boiled linseed oil for a finish.

A project like this is a nice diversion from the onslaught of insanity around the shop, whyle waiting for a finish coat to flash.

I wonder if I walked into AutoZone looking for a hammer handle if they would still ask me if it had A/C and Power Steering.

The 12" Hickory with 3/8" by 3/4" that MSC is selling should put me real close. Funny you should mention the chair leg handle. One of the hammers I'm going to replace the broken handle on appears to be JUST THAT!
