Was just telling my wife "see what dudes with time, money, and obnoxious beards can do? I wish I had time and money..." She still didn't understand...
Simple to find out more. Right click anywhere on the video and then select "Watch on Youtube." "This is our 24 cylinder Detroit that we are putting in a custom 359 Peterbilt. It will use an Allison Transmission, and the engine will be in the front of the truck. We are starting off with 40 foot 4" X 14" rectangle rails, not sure how long it will end up being."
Mart, You are referring to what was called a "quad" set. What was fun about working on those units was "setting the injectors." All of the fuel racks had to be set the same so that all four engines would share the load. The engine in the video is interesting. I am like you trying to understand the blowers and their drives. Back in the early '80's I built a few 16V71's with large 145mm unit injectors for oil drilling rigs. We thought we had built a "Hot Rod"! I can't imagine how fun that must be setting the racks on that engine. It sounds like a Limiting speed governor [Hunting on start up]. I would like to know more about it. Awesome engine!
Patrick, Yeah, I like your 4-53 story. Years ago I worked on a 6V-53 in an IR air compressor. Previous mechanic had installed the blower/governor assembly. Mechanic called in sick so I went out to the job site and to do the start up. The incorrect governor was installed [Limiting speed weight assembly instead of Variable speed] which I didn't know at the time. I always start up with one valve cover off. A worker at the job site pushed the starter button and it wound up to 4,000 RPM immediately, actually pegged the tach. He took off running! Thankfully I was able to "push" the racks back to no-fuel. No con rod out of the side. Removed the governor cover and found the double-weight assembly, removed the blower and returned to the shop. Too much fun for one day! Offy 220
I'm gonna start a web series called "Hold My Beer...Watch This" and it will be hosted by that dude. Totally ridiculous. Andy L. Kaempfer St. Louis, MO
Come on now!! It may be unpractical, but how much thought went into that.It runs so smooth. Why get em shit.If that was at a show,I bet all you negative waves would all pay money to see it and hear it run.Even my wife gets it!!
