I was watching the national news and there was a 6.0 earthquake, that is very hard on a small country.

  4. Some of it on the news now, sounds like it was a bad one. Headlines tell of much destruction and many deaths.
Good luck to all Christchurch Area HAMBers.

    Doc.

  5. Damn, im on the other side of the island and was at the computer when it happened. the table went sideways a bit and it all lasted for around ten seconds.
Just talked to my sister over there. she said theres one confirmed death, but the towns a totall mess, with reports of a bus load of people crushed.
    Aftershocks continuing.

  14. I know there's lots of Kiwis on here,so I was concerned when I heard this! I hope it's not as bad as it seems...

  15. Reports coming in now seem it is way worse than initially thought.
The death toll will be high by the sound of reports.
Right on lunchtime in a very busy city.

  16. Its real bad Bob, reports of two buses crushed, many buildings down, and fires.

Thoughts for all my NZ friends

  24. Manurewa is as far as away as you can get.
In a different island so they are safe.

  25. Mark, Manurewa's in the north island.
Christchurch is in the middle of the south islands east coast.

I was born and raised in SoCal and have been through a few in my time. I'm also taking a class on earthquakes in college right now. With the epicenter being so shallow and right in the middle of a heavily populated area, the surface waves cause a great deal of damage.

My heart goes out to you guys. Stay safe.
