didn't scott Geoffrion (sp) p*** away...? as for the (dope) .....i've heard of other well knowns that traveled in that circle... brandon
Yep. Scott Geoffrion's gone http://www.nhra.com/apcm/templates/news_template.asp?articleid=12299&zoneid= I think Bob Giddons name is un tarnished. Believe he approached NHRA and said he couldn't compete if they didn't step up to the cheating with the NOS. He packed up and took his toys home. Rusty or Billy was busted I think working for someone else. I could be FOS but seems that's how it went down. I looked up some of this on Google but couldn't find anything quickly.
I hope you have good health insurance. I used to work in the space industry until very recently. 75% of the cost of hydrazine is the transport costs ***ociated with it, including the armed guards that ****** it from the manufacturer to your facility. I'm pretty sure it's not within reach of drag racers these days, unless your team is sponsored by Boeing
Jim Oddy got busted for having a concrete filled helmet he would weigh in with, rumor has it he dropped it and it split in two...lol
Were the Dodge boys using nitrous? Probably. Was it illegal? Not by the letter of the law. Fuels were limited but nitrous is not a fuel. A week after the "break in" NHRA came out with a new rule in ND making it illegal to use nitrous. The rule had not ben spelled out before that but has been in every rule book since.
A delay box is an adjustable timer that allows you to leave from the top bulb, you release the transbrake at the first flash of yellow light, the box then counts down to the green and lets go. Gives you a much better reaction time and improves consistancy. The latest models have throttle stop timers, rpm activated switches, shift controllers, timing retard controlers, and tachs built in. Some are also capable of traction control.
The claim is there is some sort of photo optic device that "sees" the tree and releases the trans brake, hidden in the camera. That's how I heard it anyway. Craig
I have seen some pretty interesting things. A couple of small nitrous bottles in the hoodscoop, and the carbs jetted a touch rich for the dry shot they were getting - probabl 75hp or so - right down the throats of the carbs. The nitrous flowing over the boosters would draw more fuel out so you didn't have to jet the carbs way up and the car would run fine without any hint of the spray. It was powered through the Dzus fasteners holding the hood down and during inspection, they would take off the hood and take it to the trailer. No more nitrous! I have also seen V8 engines where they have one pair of cylinders with less stroke than the rest and longer rods. So when they P&G the engine from either of the front cylinders it comes out with less displacement. Also, during teardown, a lot of tracks will only pull one head and go measure the easiest to get to piston for stroke - the front ones. Easy way to hide a quarter inch of stroke on the other cylinders, and everything is still easy to balance.
at this point . there is a lot of "rocket science" in a bracket car.... there is a certain msd box that you can't have in use with a certian wire hooked up....there is a delay box that has a feature called a run duplicator.....not allowed that one either...i know of a couple guys that run timers that are set to shut the car off at a certain point in the run ....heck i have a customer that have been world champion and had boxes hid in the door....a buddy bought a track champion car that had a double floor....foot brake car , but under the floor was a ton of timers and a box ...or 2......who says cheaters never win.... brandon
If your car has a trans brake it is hooked up and switched electricly. You can install a late model car rear view mirror that tells you time ,temp, whatever. It is rewired to catch the signal from the camera. The video camera guts are changed to react to the first yellow off the tree ,turn on the internal adjustable delay ,send a signal to the mirror and the trans brake releases at a specific time. This is only an advantage if you run a cl*** that does not allow a normal delay box.Able to adjust launching to the 10 thousants of a second. Of course that is not as good as the gps sensor that is taken to the top end and installed on the guardrail and the box in your car compares your relative time at every place on the track. Your tachometer will read over 5000 if your to fast and under if your slow at any part of the track. Cross the finish at exactually 5000 rpm and a perfect run.
i was told years ago by a dirttrack oldtimer with a stellar record over many years "boy, if ya' ain't cheatin', ya' ain't winnin'" i found that to be mostly true over the years.
The pro stock ranks in the NHRA will always have guys cheatin'. It is a very tight cl*** and there is a big "brain pool" in that cl***. Not to say the nitro cl***es don't have smart guys (Alan Johnson, Austin Coil, Jimmy Prock), but they have so much more to tune with (nitro, blower, etc). Half the crew cheifs' in pro stock have engineering degrees. So, if you have a tight cl*** + smart people + big money on the line = somebody is going to cheat. Not saying it is right, just probable.
Also, there's the 'acid ported' heads for cl***es requiring stock, non-ported heads.... http://www.castheads.com/acid_porting.php
I knew some supercomp racers that had a timer hooked to the transbreak that was also hooked to a vibrating egg. It would vibrate when he should be at the 1/8th mile and a thousand feet and at the 1/4 so he could tell if he was fast or slow. Basically whether to let off or take it out the back. Every one knew about it and the guys still ****ed so he never got in trouble. I heard Dave connaly was racing super comp at an IHRA race last weekend so I guess that Lifetime Ban doesnt count after youve won a few prostock races, another team prolly cheated. How do you win 5 races in a row in your rookie year. I wasnt sad when he lost his sponsor.
In the pro ranks it is usually technology that wins , not cheating, as for mixing nitro with gasoline, come on guys it dont work, nitrous bottle in the hood , not a chance, too many old wives tales floating around, some cheating yea , there is but i dont think to the degree i see here. how do you win 5 times in a rookie year, by being a good driver with a good car and a good team, and remember he didnt just come off the street he he is a racer, period. as for cheating in bracket racing , that is sad, I have raced brackets for years and not encountered too many violations anywhere. most were actually misunderstanding from track to track rules. not that i know a lot but I have been in the game actively and we build the cars that race for 36 years and still doin it. but just my two cents , thanks for the letting me have a say.............
Syracuse 1980...Kenny Weld built this car and had Gary Balough drive it. This car's innovations weren't illegal at the time, but it was never allowed to race again, after its dominating win in dirt's biggest race. The car took advantage of aerodynamics like had never even been considered for a dirt track before. The nose was so low and narrow that the radiator was mounted in the side pod. The roof was designed like an inverted airfoil to increase downforce. It was elevated high to catch "clean air". The side pods had a vacuum effect and combined with the side skirts created even more downforce. A few years later, nearly every modified had similar body panels. I saw this car at the Saratoga Springs Auto Museum (NY) this weekend. It told the whole story about the roof. Also in the radiator air intake is painted "******atron" with hair around the O
My dad told me once that in the glory days that more then one racer would leave a shop rag hanging down from the engine compartment, just behind the front wheels, to leave early with out tripping the lights.
You mean like one of those ***** vibrating eggs from the **** store shoved up his ***??? Wow, superfreak!
They brought that car back a year later, with a completely different body, number, and driver. Took them a LONG time to get it through tech inspection, and it didn't run well. After he got out of Prison,Kenny Weld went on to revolutionize the cylinder head porting industry,by introducing CNC machines. His brother owns Weld Racing Wheels.
that deal on matty came after he won something like 40k in 3 days....and that was back in the mid 90"s..... we're not talking racing for a couple hundred bucks here..... on any given weekend thru the summer you can race for 10k or more ...i guess they are still having those million dollar races at memphis..... bracket racing has become big money....hence all the cheating ...... brandon
Yeah....not that I would know anything about that. Or low-hanging collector mufflers..or a few other things.
or acid dipping the body and beating the quarters in two inches filling wt bondo to make the car better then 50/50
