So, for the past 4 years, I've been using my '69 VW bus as a rolling storage shed... Now that its emptied out, I replaced the front brakes and I'm driving it around again cause its better suited to help me move to my new house than my truck.... after the move I planned to sell it. Now I dont want to! The thing makes me want to listen to bob marley for cryin out loud! I know this cute hippy girl that would... nevermind. I figure I should adapt it as a camper and do some kamping... Anyway, question is, would using 20w50 in it be bad? I've always heard that single weight oil is the best, been using 30 wt, but figure thats too thin, no idea how many miles on the engine, I've put 6k on it in 7 years, got the engine out of a bug that had bushes growing thru it.
Thats not bad oil, but step up to 40 or 50w oil. Change it regularly and adjust the valves consistantly and you will be fine.
I always ran Castrol 20w50 in my vw's....right from the break-in. Except the one that used so much oil I just kept a gallon of used oil and dumped some in every time I stopped... Brian
yeah, thats what I run in my truck, so I was hoping to "standardize" oil across all the beaters, thanks! Just wanted to make sure the modern stuff was compatible with that bizarre 1930's technology...
Take it from someone who drives a VW bus daily...30wt and always keep an extra qt. or two on hand. -Taylor
I always went striaght weights. 30w in winter & 40w in summer, Changed it every 1500 until got a full flow oil filter then went to 3000 until I got my 48idas and then went back to 1500. W/o aircleaners the oil would get dirt fast. Did valve adjustments with the oil changes. Oh I'd also take the car out and get it fully hot then pull the oil plug and let it drain over-night.
Oh and don't forget to clean the screen in the sump plate everytime and remember that VWs take 2.5 qts... not 3. The other 1/2 qt was supposed to be for the oil bath air cleaner.
I run straight 50w, or 60w racing oil in my 2110cc Bug. I've ran it in all my VW's. Missouri winters make it not want to start. I quit driving it on a daily bases since I moved back here. Dean
