    I had a chance to drive an 02 Z06 a friend bought new.. I think they were 385 or 415 hp, i can't remember..
But i can remember it feeling quick as hell. It had a strong torque curve and pulled real hard..

As far as the 911's being tail happy. I had only one small experience with that, and thats all i had to have. I pushed mine too hard getting on the expressway once in a long curve. The back of the car did get loose..
Very humbling..for a little car they deserve much respect if your going to push the limit's of your abilities..the'll bite ya if your not paying attention.

The best way to handle the 911 oversteer is to keep your right foot on the floor. It is especially important to NOT lift in a 911 Turbo or you will go off backwards. When you get the handling characteristics figured out it is a very satisfying experience.

  4. Porsches are cool and all but you cannot beat the new Z06 for the money. 505hp, 475 lb ft. 3.7 sec 0-60, 11.7 quarter...a car that is 200 lb lighter than the Porsche Carrera GT(like $400,000 or something insane)...take that into consideration... and it all costs a mere(for brand new supercar)$70 grand. The Viper can't handle it. A 911 can't. You have to spend at least $150,000 to take it out. Spend $150 g's on a new Z06 and you practically have the C6R LeMans winner! I have said too much. My point is made.

All wheel drive pretty much cures that!

I could head into a turn at ridiculous speed, and if it started to ass out, I'd let off the pedal a bit and it would correct immediately.

But I'm not about to argue cornering with an F1 guy who's driven shit that would probably make me turn ghost white.

    Cool video.

    Thats one twitchy fucker...

I think I'd want a quicker steering rack in that car, but then again...
    I've never driven a 911.

Had almost the same experience in a 325i...

Slid across a few lanes of traffic getting on an on-ramp... Then did this little tap dance back and forth down to a less rediculous speed as I proceded to over-correct a few times.

Scared the shit out of my Girlfriend and buddy... As for me?

...I was so sure I was going to wreck I didn't even GET scared. :)

I like Porsches. They're capable, well made cars. I'm really impressed that they have developed the original 911 design, over a 40-year period, to a level that can compete head on with more exotic, more expensive supercars

Some people on the HAMB don't like Porsches, or Germans, or furriners, and that's their right.

I brought this up in the first place because, no matter what your preferences, a street driven car that goes 0-60 in 3.2 and has a top speed of 217 MPH is FUCKING AMAZING.

I drive a carrera 4 (1990 model) everyday, great daily driver, reliable, perfomant, good fuel economy for a sport car.

On the snow, on the water you can drive it everywhere at everytime with every weather!

I'm not sure that you can drive a corvette on the snow and I'm not sure it is reliable as a Porsche... especially if the corvette is from 1990! and have 250 000 km on the speedo!

    That video clip was awesome!
There is a huge difference between having a supercar and getting supercar results. I've got a few friends who are quick to tell you what excellent drivers they are. So a few years ago, I took them all (four of us) to the Bob Bondurant Driving School. They were using Mustang Cobras at the time. It was enlightening to say the least. We all thought we were at least FAIRLY fast till we got there. They'd let you knock one lap out and keep quiet and observe from the passenger seat. Then, they took you for a lap with them behind the wheel.
My lap felt fast but I knew I had much room for improvement. I forgot what my name was when my driver took the wheel. It's like he traded in the Mustang for an F-16 when I wasn't looking. The tires never really stopped spinning the whole freakin lap. From the burnout in the pit to the time we stopped was white knuckle, pantshitting, awe-inspiring humiliation that left me feeling like I should trade my car for a tricycle because I simply don't know how to drive a car.
From the first turn I was thinking....Oh shit! There's no way we're gonna make this turn! Then we made it and I was thinking...Okay we made THAT turn but there' no way in Hell we're gonna make THIS turn! That went on for about three solid minutes. Meanwhile this cat is driving with one hand on the wheel, one on the shifter, and looking right at me half the time in casual conversation like "so...where are you from?". I got the impression he wasn't even beginning to really drive yet. That poor car. He flogged the shit out of that car...but in the most efficient way possible. The tires were always on the outer fringe of traction but we were always going the right way.. and in a hurry. I can't believe we were driving the same car. And I always fancied myself as being a decent driver. I was soooo wrong.
The point is that few us will ever get the chance to really appreciate the power of a car like that...EVEN if we get to drive it. I can't believe what I left in a Mustang Cobra when I thought I was going fast. I couldn't begin to give that RUF a proper flogging. I'd spend the rest of my life gladly trying it though.

hey thanks for posting those clips. i saw them a few years ago but could never find them again. everytime i watch em, i sit there heart racing, palms sweating. i never noticed that snapping sound before he goes into every turn before. you think he's sidestepping the clutch or what? im familiar with that sound from trying to blow up my 89 ford festiva. it never worked, it just burned all the rubber off of one of the 12" front tires.:D

I do agree that 11 seconds is FAST...BUT i completely do NOT aggree its "impressive" for a 250k porsche.
    a stock porsche...ok thats inpressive....

I've seen civics do in the 10's-11's

repoguy , i guess i might agree with that, that considering its not a drag car it might be somewhat impressive.

This subject is completely off topic and I realize that, but I think it is interesting to see a traditionalist's view point on some modern cars... Besides, it's only one thread...

Anyways, here are my thoughts and I'll shutup afterwards. Promise.

    1. A honda accord built to run 11s has nothing to do with a sports car that runs 11s. In any case, an 11 second quarter mile is damned fast. I'll reiterate that anyone that disagrees has never gone that fast. I say this after logging more than a few minutes going nearly twice that fast down the quarter.

    2. The 911 could quite possibly be the most important sports car ever built... relatively unchanged since the late 60s, decent racing record, and they are built like fucking tanks. Proof.

    3. That said, I think the most impressive "utility" sports car built in the past 15 years is actually a 4 door sedan. The AMG tuned Mercedes c32 can do everything - haul the kids, tour the country side, runs 12s, and tear up a road course. They are incredible. I got to drive one for an entire week last month... I'd love to own one.

    4. All that said, the '06 Corvette z06 is the best performance car for the money EVER built. Big words I know... but think about it...

Finally.... with all the chips out.... If someone gave me $50k right now to spend on any car in the world... I'd be looking for a '33 3w to build.

sure it does, whats more impressive? an 11second honda or a 287k 11second porsche granted one is built for the track but none the less.

im far from a traditionalist (i.e. i only like old cars, etc., and old cars are much better than new technology, etc.). and fast is fast no matter what car, im not argueing whats fast....11's ARE fast especially 11 flat.

    .. but 15's in a 5$ yugo ....is "impressive" .

same with doing 10's in a civic...one of the better days at the track this year for me was watching the imports run FAST. if you get what im saying..i guess i just dont find that porsche impressive, its a 287k car...its a supercar, its supposed to pull those numbers.

    i COMPLETELY agree with 4.

and if someone gave me 50k and i had to buy a car id buy a modded newer mini...those things impress me! haha.

...and invest the rest into a rod project...or course..

  18. I'm kind of late on this(been sick) but here's my $0.02.

I used to be an import technition. I worked at a German car shop, BMWs, MBs, VWs, AUDIs and yes the wonderful world of the Porsches. These cars are a real pain to work on but the test drive was well worth the trouble. 930s with dail a boost, 911 turbos, 928s, 911s and even the 944s(turbos are killer). The part I liked about the 911 owners is most were real car guys. Some of these guys would drive these things all year. They are great in the snow. Test driving these cars was a blast. This was the first time I've been over 150 in a car, awesome. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for a 911 (black GT-2, very sexy). Now if I had $60,000 for a car it would be a 41 Willeys. Any way sorry for rambling on, but if any of you ever get a chance to drive one of these things do it.

By the way I have driven AMG MBs, Vipers, NXS' and Corvettes

Ryan, thanks for your indulgence. Of course I realize that this has nothing to do with traditional hot rods, but I thought that it would be interesting to an audience of hardcore car guys.

For those of you who enjoyed the film clip of the RUF, here's another, more recent ride around the Nurburgring by somebody who obviously knows the way:

yeah my dad's got one that is definitely sub $5k. '87 944 turbo....you fix the motor haha. seriously it is for sale and cheap. needs alot though.

  21. Ryan is one of a handfull of folks on the HAMB that can even comment about drag racing and raod racing in the same breath. Argueing with him like like telling General Patton how to command tanks.

  22. When I was still a "car magazine guy" I had the opportunity to use a Ruf-equipped Porsche 998 Cabriolet for a weekend in Cincinnati. I don't scare easily, but that car was best described as "comfortably terrifying"-

    It's 4 AM.
I am going down I-70 at an easy 3 times the posted speed limit, with another gear left to shift into.
    It's not my car.
Hell, I don't even know where the registration is.
    I don't live in Ohio, I have a CA Driver's License.
I would have made a State Trooper's MONTH.

  23. Forgive me, but you guys are missing it.

The RUF Porsche is built for the elite elitist. It's ego fuel...an I have it because I can car. There's no argument to be made about performance, as the buyer could easily have whatever he or she chooses. You buy that car because you're a Porsche enthusiast who wants more.

And yes, there's something special about Porsches. I grew up w/ a few around me, along w/ a handful of late model Corvettes. In terms of sheer speed, the Corvettes were impressive. In terms of driving pleasure and precision, there's no comparison.

I much prefer the old 912 to the 911. You get the looks and performance of the 911, but it uses common VW brake and tuneup parts making the cost of ownership and maintanance much lower.
