Thanks, Steve, that makes sense. With the greater rigidity of the bellcranks compared to a leaf spring that should keep the front located nicely.

I've looked at the geometry of buggy-spring suspensions, and have found the usual understanding to be inaccurate. For starters nobody realizes that there are two roll centres at play. Roll motion happens through the spring shackles forming a trapezoidal system, and that roll is unresisted by the springs, though it is geometrically self-correcting. That is, the car will adopt the attitude that has the resultant force line through its centre of gravity passing through the instant centre defined by the shackles. But on top of that there is another roll component due to the deformation of the spring, and this is resisted. The upshot is that the entire system is nowhere as wallowy as one might expect.

Buggy springs developed as vernacular technology, and work quite well within the range of what is expected of them, but it would have taken some serious lateral thinking to invent them from rational first principles!

  6. Outstanding thread, great explanations of the technology involved. Going to be quite a hot rod. Thanks ELP.

  7. I still don't understand why anyone would want all that stuff but it sure is fun to watch work! I bet it was even more fun figuring it all out and actually making it. You sir, are a machine!

Great work!! The only thing I am wondering about with the frontend is the scrub line. If a air line gets cut or the compressor fails the frame is going to the road and could flip you.

  14. You must have missed where I mentioned the bumpstops keeping the frame off the ground. Thank you for your concern.

Sorry, I missed the bump stop. I guess my mind had been numbed by 22 pages of "I dont like the word ratrod" or " there was a ratrod in my town and a boy was almost killed"
    Keep up the great work!!!

ELpo man, i have a question.
On my "death squeak" thread you mentioned roller bearing, or needle bearings, and heim joints as good substitutes for rubber bushings.
Can you go a little more in depth on the subject as how to choose which one, maybe why, and what did you use on the front of this set up? rear is kinda obvious :)
Im redoin my rear suspension and i could do heims if i can get rid of the squeaking.
    THANX.

  19. Here, check out the thread I did over on DogFight!

I have blow by blow pictures and thoughts behind using steel needles over injected poly.

Awesome work man. The worst built hot rod I ever seen had no rear suspension and no rubber brake hoses. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

I just stumplet on to this build. I don't like the style, but I love the craftmanship and the Well engineered parts going In to the whole built.

I'm looking forward to updates. And i know you dident ask for my opinion, but I can't help my self. And the title should be more along the the line of un-f*cning a RR.
I'm so glad we have to get our cars teched/MOT/safety inspected, because only a complet idiot would allow that to drive In near people!!!!! But now i would let my daughter drive along site my self In that one!

I NEVER seen a BS to Update ratio 90% to 10%!

A little birdy flying about Industrial Chassis made note to me the other day that there will probably be a "Rat rod reckoning dos" pretty soon... Well, soon as my car is out of their way!

  30. i will say when the term......ahem...rat rod was first used i thought it was a breath of fresh air and a big thumb up the nose of the "gold chainers" "billet" and "boydsters" of the hot rod world.

seems the earlie renditions were more of a budget built primer, mix matched rims and mexican blanket due-ups. and they were neat for what they represented.

then the term rat rod morphed and mutated into a booger welds, leaky breaks, and intentional use of bad,non functioning parts along with no plans or following basic math or tried and tested build techniques.not to mention its gotten to a point were the shitter your car and the more "stuff"
i.e wrenches,con-rods rebar and what ever else you can find strewn on the side of the highway is cool and neat-o.

the worst part is these guys think they are the epitomey of the hot rod world and at the cusp of style.not to mention now anything in primer or flat black and "steelies" is a rat rod ........i hate that more then anything.

good for you to resurect this car as what what done to it is nothing short of a coat hanger abortion.

my hat off to you and your great work and craftsman ship, and they way you logicly describe what and why you did what you did.

    cheers.

and i hope the "wallet bruising" heals up quick so we can see some more.

one question i have is when a car up here (ontario canada) gets put on the road for the first time by a new owner they need to get a d.o.t inspection...a safety inspection and its pretty thorough to make sure the car steers and stops and turns etc. safely and correctly.

how did this car ever get plated for the road?
