Wow, my welds suddenly look like Brian Bass's compared to that mess.

I won't be so hard on myself from now on after seeing that!

One thing that's kinda funny is that they would build something that dengerous and then be safety conscious enough to run a dual master cylinder. WTF is wronf with people?

When anyone looking at my rpu build calls it at a "rat rod", we have a "nice" discusion about a high quality build and a pos. I want to live after I drive my car the first time, who , in thier right mind says to not look at the gauges because the car is so much to handle?
Anyone looking at my build please TELL ME I AM FUCKING UP!!~!! Who let's that SHIT leave thier shop?

Not only is that car amazingly bad, it is also very sad to see someone actually built that mess and had the gall to sell it to someone else. Each picture was more disturbing than the last one. If a person went out of their way to build a crappier, worse engineered car they could not do it.

I am on one rat rod forum althought I don't build rats. I go there because I like the way the Administrator runs a clean , friendly house and I like the people who go there. Over the past 5 years I have seen a DRAMATIC change in how these cars are being built. Now the novices are asking how to do things correctly and how to build a safe car. Some of us older rodders try to share our experience and steer they newer guys in the right direction. The car you are working on would be shunned on that forum, no question about it.

I don't know where a person would even start if they were doing the job you are doing on it. I wouldn't trust ANYTHING on the car, so it would almost be better to keep the body and a few components and start over fresh. It is a good thing the new owner was smart enough to get your help on this one. Picture 102 sure is a lot different from number one.

That car is a good example of why we have build (Engineering) guidelines down here that each car must comply with prior to registration. Then along the way there are the inspection 3 x processes (Milestones) that we must meet before progressing to the next. Once you pass the 3rd you can then get your pride and joy registered.
Sadly someone with limited knowledge and/or experience will look at that car and categorize it as an A-typical build including other traditional cars as being the same quality. Enough said.

  10. Hey ElP, would you mind if I used your photos with my students? I try to teach them just how wrong this sort of stuff is...

I know you have no need of my advice, but here it is anyway: Start over.

Keep posting the progress and spreading the message. The quality revolution is upon us! ;)

Wow, I've seen better welds come out of my buddies and me in my high school Vo-Ag class. Mr. Funk got a good funking from the orignal builder.

A first and hopefully last for me.... as my old man would say. "jack up the radiator cap and slide a new car under it.".

Most of the US has at least a yearly safety inspection. In NJ, this is overseen by the NJ State Troopers. In NY and most everywhere, private shops do them.

But to willfully pass something like this, your inspection license would be at stake if the car was involved in an accident. But I have seen the same junk if not worse with a valid NY State inspection sticker slapped on it.

I think there are cars that stand out, as in all styles and this is not the case ...

Well, the two band wagons are pretty full in this thread so I'll walk along side one of em, and not the one that's blowin smoke:cool:

I'm not going to worry about the rest of us. I see some responses that say the pukes who do this will give us all a black eye. Seriously? That's like saying Maaco is ruining the concours way of doing things! But this pile of steaming cow vomit is even lower than the Maaco concept. There's no real danger to it, but the downer is when some 20-sumthin yute with a bit of interest, who knows no better, stops and says, "Wow! That's what I want!". The original builder seemed to have the desire to shock even himself. The only shock is how he can afford the equipment need to fuck this thing up so bad. A not-so-shiney example of "Just because you can..."

I'm sure elP will knock this one to home plate as usual, and I'm happy for the owner that he didn't walk closer to "the light".

Not "rebuilding" but exterminating. This should be a "sticky" on the introduction page that says "If you like this car...go away."

Well, you have to admit, somebody put a lot of time and effort into that thing, even if it didnt turn out so well. Maybe it wasnt meant to be driven, but only to be yard art....we can only hope!

Does the original builder know you are tearing it down and rebuilding it?

The bottom line on the license plate should have read "Hysterical Vehicle".

Cool thread, reminds me of what I went thru with my truck. Gonna have to post the before and after photos too some day. 5years later its good to know that at least my truck isnt a "RAT" death trap no more! Thanks to my buddy at a local Garage called Bexar Bones here in town. And thanks to all the Benjamins ive spent on the redo, in the right way this time, it was all worth it.

Not true. Many states only have an initial safety inspection when a car is first registered in that state.

from an engineer, please quit using the word "engineering" to describe the crap that was done on that POS. It offends even the most mediocre and would be best used as yard art.

EL's Hot Rod Rescue...could a new Velocity TV show. "She was a once proud little Model A ...until...She hit bottom and had to be saved !!!" EL jumps out wearing a cape , holding a lit torch....Sorry, bored.
Honestly, glad to see more of these getting cleaned up, at least to the point of being safe again. It could give all rods a bad name if a couple fell apart and hurt someone. Good job sir.
