The high price of gas will be just he start. Those of you that can remember the 70's-80's and gas lines everywhere will also remember what happened to everything that was made of petroleum based products and how they affected everything. If you think it cost alot for shipping cost wait until it hits $6.00. I think the Bush (oil families) will do everything they can to wreck the economy before they leave office. What do you expect from a President and Vice-President who have been made multi-millionaires by way of the oil industries. If you voted them in, then don't ***** about it.

I know if you want to do it bad enough (drive your oldie) you find a way. Especially if it's your hobby.

My buddy used to say "rubber is the cheapest part of hot rodding" I'll ask him this same question and find out his Canadian response.

I personally don't care about the price of oil. Owning a bicycle shop will make me the fat cat in town when people start using their bicycles more. Which they don't do here in the middle of GM country.

  3. I will drive my 49 chevy a lot more the more expensve gas gets and swap an overdrive into my V8 powered S10. The 49 should get close to 30mpg when done, and the S10 should hit 25 with the OD on the highway.

My SUV is getting sold as soon as the S10 or the 49' is on the road. It gets 10mpg or so.

Everyone knows that your president is grabbing as much cash as he can for himself and his buddies since hes gone at the end of this term.

When comparing the U.S. to Europe, don't forget that in addition to the U.S. being larger, there are also two other factors (for the most part) that seem to make high gas prices justifiable. Europeans drive (once again, for the most part) manual transmissioned, diesel powered vehicles. I know diesel is gaining popularity in the U.S., especially in SUV's, but it's still struggling to get into smaller cars.

Also, aside from NYC, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco, most major U.S. cities do not have an efficient m*** transit system. Many European towns have great and affordable m*** transit.

As long as people still fill up their tanks, which they will in the U.S., the prices will continue to rise. It's been said before, but it's supply and demand.

What the hell for? The oil that's already coming out of Alaska ends up in Russia.

I'm Giving Up My 90 Honda Junker Daily Driver (i Know I Know I Don't Want To Hear It) That Gets Almost 40 Miles To The Gallon To Drive My 54 Every Day. It Might Get Mid Teens To Low 20's For Gas Mileage..... I Guess Some Of Us Just Don't Care.

We're not using much Alaskan oil down here...................and bleeding heart treehuggers? They are talking about drilling in the Arctic National ****ing Forest! For a nearly insignificant impact on the cost of fuel?

Europe vs. America? In America, 100 years is a long time. In Europe, 100 miles is a long way.

I ran 70+ miles before work today - to get to the nearest DHL office and to check out the only local junkyard that EVER has any old iron in it.

10 cents in a couple of days? Filled up the Jeep last week at $2.79. Next morning it was $2.99 and had to fill the truck. Jeep gets 10mpg and the truck gets (maybe) 8 or 9. Got me used to the gas prices! Now that my daily is back on the road and on the high side of 25mpg, I'm ok for a while.

Gasoline prices? What about household energy costs? That's what I'm worried about! I can ride a bicycle back and forth the 6 mile round trip to work if need be, but I can't do without heat when winter strikes. Maybe I'm just lazy.....................there is always that chopping wood thing I could be doing.

Less commuting, less suburban sprawl, more efficient new car/MPG standards, less traffic, less pollution, more mixed residential/commercial neighbors in downtown areas...sounds good to me. I wish I could walk around the corner and buy groceries :D

There are more to blame then the oil companies, just look at the taxes per gallon. Your state, local and federal governments make more off a gallon then the oil companies and will they ever reduce their take,NO. Jeff

  11. petrol in the UK is around 92p a litre that's over £4.50 a gallon....nearly $9 for 1 gallon of gas...it don't stop us running V8s in our rods and it won't stop you.....you will just pay and moan like we do. What it will do is make you look for dailys that do better milage.

Drill Alaska, Utah, the Gulf coast ect., the price will never go back to even $1.75 per gal. The megalomanic's that run this country will bleed the sheeple dry.

Why do you think they dont like to fund alternative fuels more than they do??? We'd never let them tax it like gasoline.

I swear just 2.5 months ago I paid 1.89 a gallon in Seymour, In. What gives? Thats almost doubled in two months. Talk about inflation...inflation in SOMEONES wallet.

Oh and by the way...why was diesel 2.64 2 months ago...and 2.64 still today. Isnt it made from crude, too? Or do they make that out of green cheese and ham or something?

  16. If/when it goes to $6, the oil companies are smart enough to do it in steps. A little raise in price, a little crying about it. Crying stops, price goes up again. If it were 25 years ago, when credit cards weren't so prevalent, i think it'd be a lot different. People have been using credit cards as a crutch. They can have plasma TV's and $6 gas for the low low payment of..............

At $6 a gallon, expect to start seeing way more old cars with turbocharged 4 cylinders. Also expect to see late model diesels emerge as a popular swap choice.

    Hmm...

    Cable? $50 a month.
    Cell phone? 'nother $50.
    hi -speed internet? $50.

12,000 miles a year inna 20 MPG ride with $3 gas? Same as cell/cable/internet.

$6 gas? Give up the TV, the phone, and the internet - you're square.

you wanna ***** about something - imagine insuring teenage drivers. Now THAT's expensive, tellyouwhut! Makes $6 gas seem cheap...

Sounds like a plan.  This country is screwed if one of the donkey party gets elected in '08.

  21. Damn, ya' won't have to go to TJ to see the donkey show.

I guess I'll just keep going forward with my 383 project for the pickup.

Right now I'm driving the wife's '81 Subaru to work. Spend overnighters out of town; only have to make 2-4 trips a week and wouldn't want to park a somewhat valuable car unattended in a downtown parking lot overnight anyway.

I don't see $6.00 gas changing anything - unless it makes burning alky in the truck more realistic.

I have a one word answer for the impending gas price hike.

    Overdrive.

    and if that don't work...

    highway gears.

    still need more?

    taller tires.

I can build a v8 to throw out scads of torque...which is what you need to move the gears!

My dad's 40 Stude used to get 28 mpg on the highway with a decent 350 and a 350 trans. It just had 28" tires and 3.08 gears. That was in the 90's. You can still get decent mileage and not drive rice

Its pretty sad that my flatty powered '34 pickup gets waaay better MPG than my 2000 superduty at 14 MPG or the wife's 2005 F-150 at 17 MPG. I also realize that it isn't a fair apples to apples comparison but come on....I am just a firm believer of the keep things simple at***ude. I am not saying stop all the R & D but just improve what is already proven.

When I was in Germany back in 1966-1968 local gas there was around $2 bucks a gallon, gas in California was about .35 cents a gallon. That's when everybody world wide should have started making a stink about it.
I guess it's like the old saying "when they came after them I wasn't with them so I didn't care, then when they came after those I wasn't with those so I didn't care, so now they are coming after me and nobody cares"!!!

There's a guy from my area (Green Bay) that built a still to make his own alcohol that he runs his car on. Last I heard it was costing him around 35 cents a gallon, might be a bit more than that now.

My '73 220D Benz will get 35mpg on a long trip, and it'd be easy enough to put in a tank for vegetable oil too.

$6 gas? Bring it. Real hotrodders will make their own fuel if the **** at the pump gets too pricey. Everyone else will bellyache about it all day but still use just as much.
