Great, I'd love to see a ME-262 in action.

I have to admit, it´s something I never thought I´d ever see. Especially flying with a 109. Ironically enough, the aircraft I saw was originally constructed in Texas.

The nearest one to you is based in Florida, with the Collings Foundation...

You´d need to check with them to see where it´ll be shown. :)

For me, born in the sixties, the P-51 Mustang was the first model airplane I ever constructed. Then as an adult to see them still around, is a testament to the undeniable value of all things built, flown, fought and lost 20 years before I was born. Nothing like Americana. Nothing like WWII.

If you had spent thousands of hours working on them sometimes in the middle of the night outside in the rain.... Well yes they did have thier moments when you took one to take off power at 4 in the morning on the runup pad on a island in the middle of the ocean & all the work you did checked out ok...Well, then it was kind of "sexy".

Not really as such, but there are plenty of museums with WW2 aircraft in them, as well as other stuff. Sinsheim Museum for example.

Meier Motors are currently doing great work on a lot WW2 aircraft for various owners.

The last I heard was the FAA was giving them problems about allowing them to fly it here in the states. Something about a silly technicality concerning the waivers that allow them to operate "Historical American Planes" with "American" being the key word.

I took this photo while flying to Marathon, FL aboard the Collings Foundation B24 several years ago.

  16. Testing new generation equipment, also sat for 20 odd hours in the Hypobaric chamber before hand to make sure the gear wouldn't leak:rolleyes:.
Then again hyper oxygenating for a few hours prior to a big jump.
Different? Oh hell yeah! Kinda miss it all!

Enough time to read a novel, hypobaric chamber.

Sun-n-Fun just finished up in Lakeland last weekend, and as always its a good time to be next door to Fantasy of Flight. Commemorative Air Force
B-29 'FiFi' has been making passes all week. Seems they had a tire problem and Kermit came to the rescue with a spare. Kermit has 'almost' 3
B-29's but hasn't flown once since 84. Today he got to fly FiFi from Lakeland to Tallahassee including an awesome low pass over FoF. Wish I had some pics of that pass.

    Last week in Lakeland:

  19. Just so you'll all know, we just saw both of these beautiful aircraft here in Terre Haute, Indiana last week. It was a nice clear 100+ day on the apron. I’ve seen the B-17 before, but this was a first for an "operational" B-24. They did not disappoint. It’s hard to express what we owe to these machines and the incomparable men that flew them in combat. Thank God some remain.

    Here's a couple of pix.

That's awesome! I visit everytime I am in Florida, nothing like standing under the wing of a PBY for shade while a P51 buzzes the field.

It is a P-51C. I rode in the Gunfighter which is a 2-seater. What a ride doing aerobatics in a P-51.

  26. The Shiffer family's warbirds, Urbana, Ohio. I had a grass strip (private airport) some years ago in Ohio, 7 miles from Urbana Airport, Grimes Field, I was their airshow announcer for a number of years. This location has turned into a hot bed of WWII aircraft restorations and a great museum, a great place for hot rodders to visit.

About 3-4 months ago I posted these two videos here as a 'stand -alone' post. Mods took 'em down in less than 10 minutes; off-topic. I didn't know this thread existed until I found it yesterday and I'm thinking they will be OK here. While the engine is made of wood, the workmanship is incredible as well as the explanations of what is going on inside. And they explain something I've never been able to figure out, why a radial engine sounds the way they do. I know all single-row radials have an 'odd' number of cylinders bur never thought about the firing order. As explained in the video all of the 'odd' numbered cylinders fire on the first revolution and the 'even' numbered ones fire the second time around; 5 the first time then 4 the next (on a 9 cylinder) hence the rumbling rump-rump-rump exhaust note.

Thanks landseaandair for posting the video. A huge thanks to all the wonderful folks who brought this great aircraft back to life. I saw Fifi fly at Oshkosh back in 1984 and it was AWESOME!
