An old quote: "No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care." Goes for individuals, clubs, organizations big or small...change occurs in the smallest of ways...and in a peaceful way from within!

<get on soap box>
Maybe I live in my own world down here. Both the SK500 and
Sherman/Dennison KKOA shows have been a great time for me.

There are a couple groups of people, I end up with the ones
having fun, wherever I am. There is a growing number
of "us" that attend the KKOA shows. Some of the more
senior attendees probably don't like the parking lot mayhem
as much, but that's the best part of these shows in my
opinion.

Moral of the story:
Make your own good time wherever you are, don't wait for
someone else to hand it to you.

Years ago I recognized a problem with a generation gap with all Rods & Kustoms ***ociation. I feel like the only one that is doing a good job is Goodguys. Why because they are not afraid of the word "change" They adapt a lot of their shows for a wide range of the automotive market. Change scares a lot of people because everyone has their own comfort zone. I understand this because I hate change. If you are wanting the hobby to continue, ***ociations have to make changes for the younger guys to relate to.

I'm willing to change and look at new ways of doing things, but I cannot change my p***ion with the Hot rods and Kustoms. When I go to a show I want to see cars that can turn my crank. I'm sorry but Muscle cars, Fast and Furious stuff, etc., don't do it for me. This is how the Stray Kat 500 got its start. I was tired of not having anything close for the true Rod & Kustom guy. So Renee and I started our own show. Every year you are going to see more and more stuff for the younger guy. The reason that I'm doing this is to give me some hope that I'll be able to enjoy the hobby when I'm 70 years old. The scary part of this rant, I'm saying something for the younger guy and I'm 40 years old. I'm not really the younger crowd but to KKOA I fit that mode.

The Hamb is a good example of someone doing something for the younger crowd. Ryan had this idea and ran with it and I don't have to tell you how blesse dwe are to have it. Thanks Ryan!! He is able to show a younger crowd how much fun this hobby can be. I got my start reading CARtoon comics, hopefully years from now, guys can talk about how they got their start was from the HAMB.

So Jester, I guess what I'm saying is, use your imagination and try to come up with something. Whatever God given talent you have take it and run with it. What you are doing right know is a good example on how you can make a difference.

Happy Trails,

Mick

13. I'm not a KKOA member, so what I say probably doesn't carry a lot of weight.
But here's how I see it.

#1 I won't follow anyone that I don't think is leading. If I don't like what the guys in charge are doing, and my voice isn't big enough to change it, I walk.

#2 I guess I don't have a grasp at all on the whole recognition thing. The way I see it its my world and everyone else is just in it. If I can't make me happy who can?

#3 You're worried about the whole 100 K thing. Like racing, it has little to do with skill, and everything to do with money. Rat Rods don't win Riddlers, right? Who cares, its all about having a good time, period. So what you're after is some cheesy little plack, or your picture in a RAG. Hell, power park right next to the big money guy, when they take his picture, you'll be right there. Back to the cash, its more likely that you'll have 100K in your lifetime than I. And I aint sweatin' it.

Well, that's just an old farts opinion, and I guess it doesn't really matter. But what the hell, take a wiff of this. [IMG]

If there´s not a club(organization, gang, whatever...) that dont suit your needs, don´t going bashing others for doing so and so. Go start your own instead!. We did start Customs of Sweden back in 1989 and we are still dedicated to traditional customs. Nothing else!

15. This has been a most interesting post and I think a lot of good thoughts and ideas have been set forth here.I liked the way the initial post was composed;it was well thought out.
If I might add my twopence in here:
I am not a member of KKOA(or any other national organization for that matter)and I have never knowingly met either Mr.***us or Mr.Weesner but I have a respect for them having read some of their articles.
One of the reasons I don't belong to any organizations or clubs(except for a local club)is that I have observed that in the vast majority of clubs it's usually 10% of the membership doing 90% of the work and the rest content to sit by and go with the status quo.
I am not particularly good at organizing things but am usually a willing participant.
I think the suggestion that you contact the powers that be and make your feelings and ideas known and express a willingness to work towards making whatever changes in an organization deemed necessary would go a long way.I'm sure these people have 9-5 jobs as well as their other duties and would welcome some input and ***istance on how to make their job easier.
I know if someone comes to me with ideas about striping or just wanting to get some ideas of their own I don't ask them for an ID to see how old they are;I listen;and learn.
I don't pretend to understand some of the music young people listen to or why they insist on mutilating their bodies in the name of being in,"style" and I expect my parents felt the same about me when I was growing up(in the 50's).Maybe it's because it's played at a volume that gives most people nosebleeds(I worked around jet aircraft inthe Navy and that would happen infrequently).
Someone(fltblk I think)mentioned older people not liking the "parking lot mayhem" at events.Maybe that's bcause they have seen firsthand what happens when parking lot antics get out of control.I was at a show at a car dealership once and the dealer was a gearhead(had his own pro stocker).About midway through the show the DEALER drags his car out and fires it up.A crowd gathers on the back row of the dealership and this IDIOT proceeds to make several horrendous burnouts down a narrow aisle between cars with about 500 people crowded in watching!Just picture what would have happened if the car suddenly broke an axle while he had his foot in it.With a spool all the torque would go to one wheel and by the time he reacted to it the car would be sideways and taking out spectators.Who wants to own a dealership?Just step up and get hit!
Sorry to get off on a sidetrack but I think this is why the promoters try to control this activity;not because they are against having fun but rather so ALL the people attending can have fun.
What does it boil down to?Get involved!Enlist some friends to help as trying to go it alone is like pissin'into a fan.Submit some pictures and an article about a local event. It may not get published but it might get you noticed.Talk to the people in charge;not at an event where they are usually trying to do 14 things at once but when the show is over and they've had a chance to recuperate.Us old fogies can't go as long as you young un's [IMG] [IMG]
So I guess I'll get off my soapbox for now.
Ray

16. Write the powers at be and see if there is anyway you can help?

Maybe you could be the connection to the younger set that they need or are looking for.

P&B'r - That reminded me of a friend of mine who had a very nice '32 roadster. He said he'd like to have a picture in a magazine, and I jokingly told him to park next to my ratty T at the first GG Columbus if he wanted to see it in a mag. Yep, a shot of mine was there, with his next to it. [IMG]
You con't have to have a big buck car to get a picture in a magazine - it just has to be different and look decent.

This post comes at a time when I just had a very similar conversation with some members of a pretty well known F-100 club about almost the same thing. Recently, they have been alarmed about how the membership of their club has been shrinking as their long-standing members have started dying off.

They had no idea that they had been driving away younger enthusiasts over the past decade with the at***ude that they didn't want a bunch of rowdy kids with their rattle-trap trucks and loud exhaust parked in with all of their similar looking red and yellow 1953-1956 F-100s that they have spent their retirement cash on.

So instead of welcoming these younger enthusiasts into the fold, they have turned them away and are finally figureing out that their club might just come to an end unless they can get some of these rowdy kids interested in becoming members. The unfortunate thing is that some of their "senior" members don't see this and are pretty rough on anybody without an AARP card in their wallet.

Hope they figure it out before they go the way of the dodo bird.

KKOA?

Waaa?

Who wants to go to a camper/trailer park anyway? [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Yea, I know....
It's different, but not by much.
It's still a bunch of people, who like sorta the same thing getting together in the same spot.
If you don't like doing what you want to be doing with a bunch of geezers, who just so happen a lot of have been doing since they were your age, then don't do what the bunch of geezers have been doing since they were your age.
Go do something else or start a "Under 30 rodders organization", and kick yourself out inside of a decade.
Or join one of the organizations and volunteer to recruit "new blood" and younger rodders so you don't have to hear more about bowel movements than ETs.
You know, when these "geezer ***ociations" started the people who started and attended them were barely old enough to vote. They were your age!
So quit yer *****in' junior.
Or put up, shut up, and keep doing it till you're a geezer too!

My vote is for Mickey Bryant and the way he runs the sk500. I went last year and it was great. Mickey never stopped moving all weekend making sure everyone was having a good time. Hopefully he will be running more KKOA events (or all of them) in the future and if this happens I feel the KKOA will be in good hands.

Mickey was proactive. He didn't like the way it was headed so he started his own KKOA show with their blessings. Hats off to Mick. I wish there were more guys like him in charge.

I think organizations are stupid. WTF do you guys want to be so organized for anyway?

Does it make you feel "whole" to be apart of these things?
I guess I just don't get it.

If the KOA, Goodguys, NSRA, "I am a grown man and like knit", Royal Water Buffolos", or any of those other "clubs" go under because they fail to p*** the torch, its their own fault.

Who cares?

I'm sure there will be a new breed to replace them and hand out gay *** "collectable" mugs.................

I wonder if the goodguys wear matching underpants? HaHa

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions. I too would like to see Mickey with a larger roll in the organization. This post was intended to "stir the pot" if you will. So in closing I would like to clarify my feelings a bit because it seems as though some have picked out bits of my first statements without context or perhaps I conveyed it poorly. I have nothing against 100k cars that was not the point it was simply an example. I care nothing about plaques or trophies in fact I usually leave the show before the awards are even judged for. I am in this for the enjoyment not for recognition (and its a good thing too other wise i'd be ***ed out). I am not suggesting a coo, just a point counter point type thing or a representative, if you will. A representative that speaks for the younger generation comming up. I am "fired" up about what I've been doing and its nice to be around others that are as well, this is the reason I visit this board so much, so it would be nice to see the leadership looking forward to things as much as I am and thats the point. This is my last comment on this thread, "If anyone here is in the postion to bring in a fresh sound to the music in my head I would be ready and willing to help out. I am just one small person with almost no voice but together with other small voices we can scream."
