I have a 49 Coronet with the flat 6 and fluid drive tranny. Im having troubles locating a starter for it. Does anyone know if any other year starters will work? Ive seen some newer Jeep starters that look very similar but just not sure

  2. Do you just not have a starter, or does the one you have need work??

FWIW, all six cylinder Chryco starters from the era SHOULD work, but if you can send me a pic, I can check the '53 DeSoto in my drive to see if it's the same.

I couldn't cone up with the part # but just call the local NAPA. Mopar flat 6's using that same starter were used all the way into the 60's on equipment and the mid 50's on cars. They can get that starter it's just not on the NAPA website for some reason.

Ive tried Napa, but they didnt list one for a 49... ive seen other years and the starter looks the same but i didnt know if the ring gear and starter gear would mesh correctly.

I do have the starter, it was frozen when i got the car and i tore it down and cleaned everything up and now it works but its not spinning fast enough to start the engine. I have even jumped 12volts to the starter and that helped but still not enough.

A decent starter shop should be able to fix it.........and it would be BETTER than some rebuilt POS......

    Just my 2 cents...
