I figured since we already started working on it; it's time to start a build thread. It might just be that I can't contain my excitement!

we are the (proud) new owners of this '36 5W Coupe project.

We have a very long road ahead of us, and a lot of learning along the way, but we are beyond excited and ready to roll with this one.

A lot of questions and answers needed along the way for this build but we're confident that we can make this one badass ride.

First on the agenda: new floors, rust and panel repair

We went up this morning with trailer in tow and came home this afternoon with this beauty. Unloaded all the parts into the basement and *gasp*....the spare bedroom ...and immediately went to work on the car.

I hope you all enjoy it and we're excited and ready to learn!

I was wondering what you were working on getting. Very cool! You guys have your work cut out for you, but from what I have seen so far, you are both up to the task. Subscribed!

Thanks! We still own the Plym and she will stay in our hands for awhile. No plans on selling it right now. For now; we're going to drive it and enjoy it while we build this one. We're on the hunt for a decent car trailer for cheap so we can keep her high and dry.

As for plans for this one? We're going to try and keep it as a traditional hot rod build. We anticipate this one taking us awhile due to waht funds can allow but we will get there. The car has been a work in progress since 1975 :) . First plans are new floors and such. there is some older butch body work that we are going to take grinding wheel to and fix. There is a lot of metal work ahead of us but we're ordering parts cat. today so we can start shopping for what we need. more pics to come. Hard to get pics of all the parts and such since half are in the basement and half are stored in the bedroom haha. So far; the doors and such look in pretty good shape. Our work is in the floors and body. Once we get the floors and some of the rot work done; we're going to have the body soda blasted. It'll save us a lot of time.

LOVE IT! Looks like you have a head start on me, but hopefully (depending on funds) I won't be too far behind. At least you have floors. What are the plans??

well the floors are not here yet. they should be here friday just in time for a 3 day weekend of working on it :). Plans for it? Well...first thing is getting it all stable and fixing the rot. The body work that was done to it was done in the 70's and it is about as hack as it gets. I wouldnt consider it "body work". The body lines on the rear quarter panels were formed using BONDO. you wouldn't notice by just looking at it but once you start hacking away at it...it's pretty ugly...BUT...fixable. The lower front cowl panel near the bottom of the door is the same story...formed with mud. Basically instead of fixing the rust; someone mixed up one giant batch of bondo and slathered it on and sanded it down to make it look like something. The rockers are gone but are on order. anyways; plans for right now are to put new floors in. Trunk floor looks pretty good. Also we're going to start with the replacement panels and the rockers. Main plans are to get the body stable and sitting on the frame correctly to put the floors in properly. We're on a roll and ready for the order to come in. Lots of "fixing" to do. Long term plans? Going to build a traditional style hot rod. No small block chevy for this thing. Going for a vintage flathead or a vintage hemi for it. Depends on what our funds can allow. We're not rich by any means and don't have very deep pockets but we're going to have to take our time since we don't have much cash to start off with.

My boyfriend, Joe, is discouraged a little bit because he doesnt think it's going to be a nice and clean show peice but i have confidence that with time and good work; it will be something :D

For now its been called the Joe-lopy...that is until we can make it a little prettier. :D

I'd also like to add that we could use any and all advice provided by you fellow HAMBers on what to do and how to build one of these. We have plenty of literature to read and learn from but that only goes far. Real life experiences are much better :) . We'll be on the hunt for parts and such for it. all the basics are there...its the little things that will get us. Just keep in mind we're financially strained and can only do so much at once :)

  15. Cool start. Take your time and you will get it done.

Thanks Tugmaster. So while I try and figure out my digital camera woes; i figured I would keep everyone entertained with some fun i had with chalk on the rear end of the car last night. Boyfriend was busy playing with the plasma cutter and i figured I'd add some "character" to the operation...Keep in mind this is the first vehicle i've ever drawn. Detailed photos of what we have to overcome in the next few weeks are coming; I'm having a compuer vs. digital camera fight right now :)

Anyone have any good refernece thread to '36 5W coupe builds here on the HAMB? Thanks :)

Wow farmergal, you guys are moving at a good pace! The paint on the Plym hasn't dried and you guys are into the next project. Respect. Going to be following this build as well, considering I read the possibilty of a "vintage Hemi". Wow, how cool! You guys form a great team,so this car will also turn out to be beautiful. Good luck on the build, this is going to be great!

thanks for the encouraging words Farmer12! The Plym has graduated to a car trailer and is going to the drive-in to see Cars2 tonight! She'll be our driver until this one is finished. We'll probably hold onto the Plym for awhile; we're pretty "attached to it" :) Floors and patch panels should be arriving sometime today. We're ready to hammer down all weekend to get the body solid enough for us to be able to take off the frame. We've never doen patch panels or anything so this should be interesting :)

Take your time and map it and plan it out. Break it down to steps and accomplish one before moving on to the next. Don't look at the big picture or it can become too overwhelming. I think 36 coupes are one of the best looking cars out there and congratulations on the purchase.

thanks Brandon. Not a whole lot to report about right now. We haven't had much time to work on it and we've been just plodding along with it. Hard to sit down and work on it right now when the weather is nice and we want to take the plymouth out for dinner or something. Anyways; we've been working on the pillars and started putting patch panels in. Figured we'd get the pillars finished and then the patch panels since there isn't anything left to the entire bottom of the car. Once we get the panels on; we can start laying floors down since we will now have something to attach them to. Once we get these things done; we will be on a roll from there.

  22. No problem believing that here. My lady has always been a lady but she has pushed pulled or shoved more cars into the yard than most rodder do. You are the tops kid. Seems perfectly normal to me.

Just keep plodding along on the old car, you and your other half will accomplish a lot in life if you just keep plodding along.

we have the front floors laid out right now just waiting to finish the patch panels so we have something to connect everything to. We only purchased the front floors and i must say we're glad we didn't waste the money to purchased the rear floors and trunk floors. What cheap piles of crap! Since we dont have a bead-roller we're going to build a frame under the floors to ensure strength and sturdiness and build our own floors. It's cheaper for us and we will know it won't be crap. Once summer-time decides to leave new england we be back to having nothign to do and more time to work on the car :). We're already trying to decide what we want to run for an engine and trans and such.

That's the way I went with the floors in the Buick. 20 Gauge steel sheet I believe. Cut, hand formed and welded in. They seem very sturdy and it doesn't take long at all!

Sweet! I had seen several people do it that way here on the HAMB and figured it wouldnt be hack haha. we're aiming for 2 years to finish this one. we'll have to wait and see just how much we can accomplish this coming winter. thinking about running a flat head with some hop up parts but dont know how affordable we can find one. we want something with some giddy-up to it. this is supposed to be a fun hot rod!

  27. I don't know if these photos will help you guys or not...took them of a buddy's 36 five window when he first got it home...I don't have photos of the new floors/rockers/lower 1/4 patches he installed but I can take some photos on Friday night when I go over to work on my car..let me know if you still need some images..

awsome! we're all in the same boat! I've done a lot of research here on the HAMB following threads involving '35 5 and 3 window builds and '36 5 and 3 window builds. it's helped us a lot. We could definately use all the photos you are willing to supply! The more photos; the better for us :) I can't believe there is so many new '36 ford coupe owners!
