just pulled my dads old car out of my moms garage. A little fresh gas, battery, brake bleed and she was ready to roll. I don't know where the rat who was living in the seats will sleep now, but oh well. Anyways, it made the drive home. I'm going to take it down for the Woodward cruise here in Detroit, (I hope the barn find excuse will cover me for the roached appearance). This winter brings a complete tear down, Carson top and a fresh build on the very tired y-block. Not really a "discovery" but still cool pulling it out and bringing it back. My old man would have liked that.
Fantastic!!! Are those gennie Jimmy Jones skirts? What color are you thinking for that Carson top? (Black might be cool.) How about a shot of the rear?
When was it built? Did it ever have a top before? That's a trip back in time. Great for it to be out and about again. And yes, your Dad would be happy for it to hit the streets again. Good stuff.
I bet there is a very cool story on your car.......I'm totally loving that color! Got some definite 'time warp' visuals....I like it big time!!!
Pretty cool! just dont make the common mistake of blowing it apart then leave it for years. Wonder what the windshield is from? Wheres Squirrel?, He needs to see this for some edsel ideas. Thanks for sharing Terry.
Holy crap......I live in Livonia and this Kustom 61 Ford has been hiding in a garage....wow that thing has a ton.....and I mean ton of potential...some chrome reverse and skinny whites would really drive the 60's theme home....man that's cool...need more photos and build info
I lived in Livonia 21 years just down from the Rec center. I have seen this car before in the past, but don't recall when. What's the history on it?
Thanks for all the thumbs up. I'll post some "back in the day pics soon" The short story is, My dad got the car around '80, it was a two door post sedan. he liked customs, and I liked chopping stuff up. So as a kid with limited talent and a lot of Rod and Custom little books, I chopped off the roof, re-inforded the frame, cut the windshield (three windshields before I got it done without cracks) front end is hand formed headlamp pods, with '57 Desoto lower bumper assy. (everyone loves the upper from the Desoto, but overlooks the lower, its a very cool piece) hood and decklid came from another '61 and had been louvered many years before. the jones skirts were also on the parts car. It never had a top, but when it was built, but it was always the plan, so the support and mounting points are there. back end is a simple rolled pan. My old man drove the car for 20+ years, rain, shine, he didn't care as long as he was driving. When he got sick, he took it out less and less, and it ended up sitting. he passed a little over two years ago. I've gotten a lot better at the car thing and I really want to see it as it was always meant to be. soon
A big plus 1, drive it! After the slumber it needs road miles while the world looks on and admires. I'd bet that's what your dad built it for, enjoy the trip! Leave the show quality for the posers and their trailer queens, history and genuine patina are pure character that can't be duplicated for any amount of time, effort, and $$. I'm not normally a fan of bubble skirts but on this car they just flat out work right! As for color on a Carson top, how about the same as body, just a shade or two darker? Would keep the same overall smooth flow and look without sticking out like a sore thumb. "Simple is elegant, complicated is arrogant" - HB11 Ed
He was the best.....miss him badly..as do many others. I was striping a Refigerator door last night....haven't done much since he passed...looked up and there was something he did for me years ago hanging up...needless to say the job got finished and I gave it my all....like he would have wanted me too! Do you still have the bike? I'd love to see pics of his work
no, sold it 10 years ago. it was a simple straight line stripe job. he was real cool, my old man knew him from way back in the Hollywood auto parts days.
That's a great story about the car....what you are doing, and it's a fine legacy to your father indeed....the visuals are outstanding on the car, and doesn't get much better than that, to drive your father's car with a smile on your face....good stuff!!!
