I don't remember the year , or what movie , but it would have been in my mom's old Mustang as a kid , back in the 70's at the Sinking Spring drive-in (now a strip mall ) . Those were the days ! There are only a couple nearby drive-ins (within an hour or 2) remaining. I hope to take my daughter to a few movies there before they disappear also. The old shoebox ought to attract a bit of attention , lol ! *** EDIT *** I found some info (and some pics) on the Sinking Spring drive-in - brought back more old memories ! Even remembered how my girlfriend (now wife) and I used to go there and watch the movies lying in the back of my old '68 SS ElCamino . Check out the site here -------> http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/37334
I don't remember what the movie was (Star Wars?) but I do know it was at the Highway 39 Drive In in Westminster Ca. The Drive In was just down the street from my parents house. It's been torn down and replaced with a Walmart.
I don't remember the 1 st movie I saw at a drive-in - BUT I remember the 1 st time I DIDN'T watch the movie - LOL - Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit. Wow was she hot!
I turned my '58 Corvette in for a big '65 Impala SS. I really appreciated the additional space the Impala provided on "Drive-In Movie Night"
Holly ****! We haven't been to all that many drive ins but i remember going to all three of those. We are from central Illinois and camped a lot in upper illinois and Wisconsin. The Dells was one of our favorite places to visit. Went to swap meets in Jefferson too. This topic sure brings the old farts out of the woodwook. Good thing my dad told me all about the old days!
The Starlite Drive in north of Pekin, Ilinos in my 49 Dodge. I think we should have called our oldest son Starlite!
I spent my first 8 years of life living across the street from the Sunset Drive In - Springfield, MO. Watched many a movie from my bedroom window, with muffled, delayed sound because of the distance. They ran a lot of 70s "B" movies and all of the Japanese monster movies. I watched mecha monsters destroy all kinds of stuff! One afternoon a nasty thunderstorm came through and blew down the big wood screen structure. We stood in our living room and watched it go down. Now it's the Sunset Trailer Park. We still go to the occasional drive in movie at the theater in Aurora Missouri. It's called the "Sunset Drive-In"
Lynn's drive in. Ohio oldest drive in. Remember going there for the fist time with two friends in an all white 1957 Fairlane convertible. We thought we were just hot ****. We watched Night of the Living dead. Year was 1968.
There was a drive-in for many years here in Capital Heights, Md. on Central Ave. that always showed "dirty", x-rated flicks on Fri nights. Of course there was a tall fence facing the highway so no one driving by would be offended. You could catch a quick glimpse of the movie as you drove by but that was all. Ironically there was an old house high up on a hill opposite side of the street from the drive-in where an older couple lived where there was a perfect view from their front window. If you ever saw them out in public, they were always smiling and they were always home on Friday nights.
I cant recall any of the movies but will never forget mom & dad loading all us into our 1965 Chevrolet station wagon and lowering the rear gate to watch the movies.. Great and simple times in Bolton, CT. Haven't thought of that in years .. Thanks you
Near me there was three on the Berlin Turnpike..The Berlin Drive In [open maybe around 50'-closed mid 80's] in Berlin on the corner of the Pike and rt 160..Couple miles north on the Pike was the Pike Theater [1949-1989] in Newington and maybe 1/2 mile north was the Hartford [em Lewis] Drive In [1946-1996] also in Newington on the corner of Prospect Street and the Pike, a McDonalds was built across the pike from it in 57/58' or so, becoming the place for hanging out and racing arrangements on the Pike, which made the news in 61' or so, was pretty wild, used to pedal my bicycle down there to catch what I could car wise, ***** pedaling home in the dark, used to catch parental hell....Early 50's I was there in pj's probably the older sister and brother too..First non pj movie was with the old man when I was about 10/11, depressing movie about a teenager who ran away from home and trying to survive, I think one of the songs in the movie was Lonely Boy..Now you'd think I'd remember the first movie I attended when I got my licence in 65' but haven't a clue..Probably was an Elvis Presley movie, used to be an abundance of girls to watch too...Back in 88' I helped a bunch of guys [Don Galant jr and three others] do a cruise night at the Hartford Drive In, 888 spaces filled and whatever other space all around the perimeter was filled..The owner would only give us payment [for organizing and policing, money was always used to fund the next cruise] for the spaces but actual ticket sales were over 1000, he had to go out for more food twice....The pike was jammed for miles....Movies were AG and AG11..
First time I remember, was Glendale WV, (forget the name of the drive-in theater) My parents went to see the "Long, Long, Trailer" with Ball and Desi in a '47 Plymouth. I was 5 or 6, or 7 or 8,,,,,,,,,,,,. The Grafton Drive In, in Grafton WV, closed either last year or year before last. Couldn't afford the digital changover.
My mom and her friend took 9 of us to a movie in the 60's. Shower scene came on and they were having us cover our eyes leaving as fast as we could. I kept looking out the back of the station wagon at Barefoot in the Park. Still bring it up to mom every once in a while.
As one of 7 children you can imagine my parents did not take us to the movies often- The first I remember was the Dirty Dozen when my Dad took 6 of us camping and it rained for 3 days- he took us to save his sanity! My youngest sister was not born then.
I grew up in a small town of about 2500 back in the day and the drive inn was the place to go every weekend. Still exists today with a fund raiser to go digital since 35 mil was no longer available. Nothing fancy but great memories. Saw every Clint Eastwood spagetti western like Good the Bad and the ugly etc. . Saw most of the movies anyway.
Being born in the mid 70's I missed out on the whole Drive Inn move experience. I missed my last chance a few years ago to go to the cottage view Drive Inn in Cottage Grove MN before walmart bought the property and tore it down but I guess the owner of a roundy roundy track here in MN has bought the screen and put it back up so maybe there's still hope.
The first movie I saw at a drive in was Ben Hur and I was in a 59 Chevrolet. It was the last weekend for the last drive in near me. The land is sold.
Sometime late 1940s,sat on blanket on hood of KizerFrazer, there was a play ground with swings an slide just under an in front of the big screen
1954...It had to be a John Wayne flick as he was my dad's favorite. We lived in California and dad drove a shiny black 6 year old 48 Pontiac torpedo back sedan......I remember the long, straight palm tree lined road to the drive in. My dad couldn't WAIT for it to get dark so he could fire up his spotlight before the movie started and play "chase the beam" all around the blank movie screen with other guys who also had spotlights. If there was singing/dancing or love scenes, he'd loudly complain until the action scenes started again....
1971 at the Sunnyside theater, Fresno, Ca. Saw a double feature, "Two Lane Blacktop" and "On Any Sunday", with my future wife out the back of my 55 Nomad. Had to go back again the next weekend with 2 buddies to see what the movies were all about. Watched em this time out the windshield. Still married to same gal and still 2 of my favorite movies.
I think the 1st movie I saw at a drive-in was 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea at the Bay Shore D.I. I recall some cartoons up front. I must have been 5 or 6. We were all dressed in pajamas and sat in the back of my dad's 1959 Ford wagon on a mat. After that, many moons later I went on my own. Planet of The Apes festival in 1973 or so, played until 5 am. The Shining at Copiague in 1979 (?), I recall it involved large amounts of alcohol. A couple of the theaters had an outdoor bleacher section too, those were loaded with empty beer cans and used rubbers... The best was around 1975 when I had my Chevy C30 panel truck. We would park towards the edge of the row, with the back of the truck facing the screed and both back doors open. Spackle buckets of ice & beer, lots of hand rolled smokes. You could sit in the truck on the **** (aptly named..) carpet of take a lawn chair outside. The last one I saw was in 1984 at Westbury, in my wife's 1973 Olds Cutl***. Two days later, the car got totaled out but my wife was ok.
The first Robo-C0p. My dad thought we would watch Platoon after that. Didn't take but a minute or two of the language and we were on our way home. I was probably 10 or so.
a couple i recall were "superman and the mole people," which was sort of a pilot for the tv show starring george reeves. it was so low-buck that reeves' flying scenes were animated. another was "tarzan and the slave girl," with lex barker as the ape-man!
There was a theater like that one in Portland Oregon when I was little. I think that particular photo is probably photo shopped, not many steam trains still around in the '50s and that scene is from Fail-Safe circa 1964. yea yea I know major buzz kill. First movie I remember seeing in a drive in was "The Blob" I don't know how old I was probably 4 or 5.
