Hey Keith, I'm glad you posted the pic of the original drawing. I know we discussed all this when I was out there and how we both got squat out of the Boyd Design contest too. Hey, you guys telling him to let it go... it sucks when you get kicked in the balls like that. I got screwed over by my drummer in an old band of mine, and while I have moved on, sometimes it just really pisses me off to this day. For you non creative types, compare it to the time your wife left you. People go postal over this type of resentment!
Be assured "What goes around comes around"...rest easy there Retro...he'll get his...and it isn't the first time he's ripped people off...a friend of mine in Indianapolis built a very nice chopped '50 Merc several years ago, had it at GG's event there...Chip was there, loved the car, talked to my friend about it, found out everything that was done to it...went back to Cali and "designed" the very same car for a customer of Boyds...including the same color of paint!!! It's a bitch getting stabbed in the back...but it's all about money and ego... R-
[ QUOTE ] Also the one in your pic isn't a roadster and it isn't anywhere near as similar to the one retrofire drew. [/ QUOTE ] What exactly is your definition of a roadster? Dont bother posting a reply just go look it up!
The bitch of it is, Chips dad is a member of the old school. Sam did/does nice work and is unknown by anyone outside the custom car scene. His son is star struck and in for a beating if he doesn't pull his head out of his ass. I guess Boyd rubbed off on him.
I met him at Lead East a few years ago. He was nice enough, and generous enough,to help us out with our Pinhead Charity Auction. We stayed up until dawn, painting and talking cars. I've never met a nicer, and more talented, person. My $.02
I'm very disappointed in all you guys. Your acting as if Chip bought the car finished from Keith and turned around and took credit for it. Titus took an initial scribble and those ideas over to a more talented, more capable person who built on them, three years worth of building them. If you look at the car it's not that much the same, no top, blisters behind the seats, nomad ribs on the deck (hope you don't think that was an original idea), two tone (which ended up being different). If you had any capable designer draw a two-tone 56' roadster is going to resemble your sketch. Everyone one this board loves to talk shit about the Paul and Paul show, Boyds show, Monster Garage and if there is anyone in the whole car building world that deserves a TV show IT IS CHIP FOOSE! I know his style is far from traditional but that doesn't make him any less talented. I have talked with and worked with Chip and he is without a doubt the hardest working person I've ever met. The guy is obsessed with cars like a drug. If you think that i have no respect for the hard work that artists put into there work then you are wrong, that couldn't be further from the truth. I just think the facts here are getting lost and the whole thing is snow balling because of the clash of styles on this board and Chip's. I actually have a copy of two of Keith's sketches and they are pretty OK.
Wow, that is some shit... I got involved in doing some sketches for a concept car a long time ago. I won't say who for or why. Anyway I did some rough drafts and showed them off - next thing I know somebody else's ideas were looking just like mine and their concepts were accepted as origionals before I got a chance to finish mine. It would have been silly to turn my stuff in after the other person beat me to it....I was chumped. I thought of raising a stink and getting it all out, but instead I chose to get away from the whole mess. FUCK 'EM. I didn't want a reputation as a shit starter or a whiner, so I just sucked it up.... It makes your blood boil and your stomache churn just thinking about it... I don't have any good advise for you here, but know that I got your back. I hope Foose gets his - or at least I hope you get yours. I (living in the mid-west) never get to interact with anyone like this face to face, so I always had the impression that he was/is a stand-up guy who can design in his sleep. I must say he DOES come up with some real wild stuff - assuming it is his stuff. I hope that if he really is a punk that someone someday puts him on his ass... Brxter - take a long walk off a short peer... HAMBers back HAMBers VIVA LA HAMB!!!!
Easy to nail anyone to a cross on a message board, but there's always two-sides (usually many more) to all people. As someone who's been skewered on stupid stuff I will say out of all the "star's" I have met he's the only who has called me to "give back" when he had no reason to. What he wanted to do was help create an award in recognition of handicapped rodders who go through a thounsand more times of strife to get on the road than other rodders do. He didn't want anything out of it, just wanted to do something special for those people. Theft and inspiration are VERY closely related depending on how you look at it. Same goes with music and any form of art. His art is hard to beat in it's genre.
Sucks to get screwed, really sucks if something that came out of your mind and creative soul gets hijacked by someone else, bottomline is though I'd rather get out in the garage and stare at my own half finished garage built never gonna get into the Roadstershow semi lowbuck (one of lifes great lies) POS than watch Chip Fosse or Boyd et-all "build" crap on TV. Retro it sucks and the chump is making money and thats the way it is life is full of unfair bullshit, appreciate the fact that alot of folks do know, and admire what you do. BXfuckit or whatever your deal is understand the mans frustration (and I think that drawing is a bit more than a scribble) and lets all get back to building stuff... Oh yeah and Foose and Boyd uh just cause you can build it does not mean you should!!!! (these guys are both great craftsmen but umm style? nuff said)
[ QUOTE ] Brxter - take a long walk off a short peer... HAMBers back HAMBers VIVA LA HAMB!!!! [/ QUOTE ] What a bunch of SHIT! HAMBers back HAMBers, I thought HAMBers were like friends, if you can't tell your friends when thier wong then maby your not really friends. I will agree with VIVA LA HAMB, the HAMB is great for getting and giving info, but some of you guys and your off base opinions are ridiculous, I think you post just to watch your number go up
He is talented, I've gotta admit, but "OverHaulin" blows. I guess it's all about the $$$ to some people. -Aaron
As one artist to another I completely understand your pissings here. You just can't seem to trust too many people out there these days, I don't think. It's almost like you have to keep all your plans and ideas under tight lock and key untill YOU have the deal to see the design through to production...Too many goddamn liars out there. In a way it's a lot like the music industry....But like the others have said, just keep goin and use this as fuel to make something better. Good luck retro..
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Also the one in your pic isn't a roadster and it isn't anywhere near as similar to the one retrofire drew. [/ QUOTE ] What exactly is your definition of a roadster? Dont bother posting a reply just go look it up! [/ QUOTE ] No back seat asswipe.... You need to look it up...
retrofire - Add another to your corner. I know where you're coming from. I'm going to make a gross generalization and say that anyone who doesn't see the problem here must not be involved in a creative process day to day. And if they are...that's just sad.
[ QUOTE ] It's a 56' roadster with blue on it. [/ QUOTE ] Henry Ford had it right...where did you go wrong Brxter? For your own edification Brxter...Even Webster's has a definition of "roadster" ...let me quote it -- "An automobile with an open body that seats two and has a folding fabric top and a luggage compartment in the rear." Any novice that is really into cars should know that...you must be a newbie at this car thingie. Oh yeah...there's no such thing as a 56' (foot) Chevy...unless you stand 56 feet away from it and call it a roadster!!! R-
Have you talked to Foose about this? Could be the editors left your name on the floor. JimA....I really miss Titus in the Gazette. Love him or hate him, he was full of piss and vinegar and I loved his articles. ....did the gay, flat black, hillbillies on this board get to him?
Retro, Anyone who knows us has heard our rants and opinions about what we have gone through....You have our understanding and empathy on this matter.... It's ALWAYS easier for people to throw their hands up,turn their backs, display indifference,etc.... UNTIL IT HAPPENS TO THEM..... THEN, when it hits home, the COMPLAINTS and RANTS are "okay"... We wish we could offer you more than just verbal support...
"An automobile with an open body that seats two and has a folding fabric top and a luggage compartment in the rear." I always thought that was a convertable. A roadster doesn't have windows in the doors and may or may not have a removeable or folding top. At least that's the old definition I grew up with. Chevy screwed that up when they decided to call the Corvette convertable a roadster. I still remember my old man point out how Chevy couldn't tell the difference. As for the car, it sure looks like you should have gotten credit for some of the design elements like the chrome on the trunk, but even that, to me is just a modification based on the old factory Nomad strips and as for it being topless, I had a buddy who's older brother did that to a 57 Chevy back in about 63/64. Where do you draw the line. Sucks when the newest guy gets all the credit, but that's the way money works. I do feel for you. I had pics in mags years ago with someone else's name under them.
A roadster doesn't have a back seat, roll-up windows or a permanent top. This applies to American pre-war iron as well as British sports cars pre- and post-war. What we call "convertibles" today started out as "cabriolets" in the late 1930s. The cabriolet had roll-up windows, which mandated fixed windshields, and soon brought any rumble seat inside under the folding top. Part of the confusion may be traced to the 1953-1955 Corvettes, which were roadsters, from 1956 on Corvettes with soft tops were convertibles, but the general public thought they were somehow cooler calling them "roadsters". I used to admire both Chip and Boyd, but their respective TV shows have REALLY disappointed me. I just hope it's the writers' fault, and that neither of them are the pompous egomaniacs they seem to be on their shows. Sorry, just my $.02.
No one here, other than the parties involved, know all the details to this matter. BRXTR, That is not HONESTY you are giving, it is RUDENESS.
Sorry this happened to ya man, I think this has happened to all of us in some way, if not it probably will. First guy gets left out while the last guy gets the credit. Just keep your art tools moving.
retrofire Sorry you got hustled friend. I haven't read the whole thread and probably shouldn't post my thoughts on the subject. But, there is a way to make the networks listen to you. Boycott, works with just about anyone bigger'n'you. And that's all I got to say.
