Hot Rods Over priced cars...

Last spring my girl made a deal on a Caddy, I sent her a link to the ad and she made the owner an offer of a grand less than his asking price, which he accepted, then she gets me to call him and set up a time to go pick it up. Problem was it was 7hrs away. So the offer is on the table and the owner is kool with it but he starts to get a lil' iffy when I tell him I'm 7hrs from him. He tells me he's had eleven other people text him about the car wanting to come look and yada yada. The car had only been listed a few hours when I saw the ad and it's a desirable enough car so we were committed to buying it and I told him I would take the next day off from work and come pick it up, cash in hand, and to prove I was serious I told him I would give him another $300 on top of the price he had already agreed to if he would hold it till noon the next day. He was floored that I even offered that deal. He agreed to do it on the condition that I texted him to let him know when I left so that he knew when to expect me. I texted him that morning, I was there by noon as promised, and in the end both parties were happy.

  2. I guess the whole thing is an overpriced car is just one that costs more than you think it should!
If you are OLD like me you might remember 100 dollar Model A's, 200 dollar Deuces and 55-57 Chevies!
    Time schucks on!

Yeah. There is also the flip side of it. How many people are out there just trying to get cars for $1000 dollars. A lot. I have to say that there are a lot of cars that are priced fairly & no matter how much the seller negotiates the buyer will always feel like they need to get it cheaper. In my opinion the guys doing this are just as dirty as the guys overpricing the cars. And for that matter that's probably my why some people over price their cars, because they know their gonna get beat down on the price no matter what. So I think that there's BS happening on both sides. Just my 2 cents.

So your ad says "Price not negotiable". I know, you'll still get dumb calls, but maybe not so many.

Sometimes you get deals. Sometimes you don't.
Don't ever get a car because it's a deal. That is unless you are a flipper.
I know a guy that does this with goats and chickens. He buys them for cheap and sells for a profit. Those critters never set foot on his place.

I write the following for someone looking for their first car.

    1. Find out what you want.
What really excites you? Does what you love really fit your life? I have done it all my life but it sucks working on one in the sun and mud. Go to shows meet folks and do the research to see if the car you like is really for you.

    2. So you have your car picked out. Let's say it's a Rocket 88 Oldsmobile.
Now.....running or non running? Rusty or intact?
Do you want to resurrect one or drive and maintain one? Project or Runner? Believe me there is plenty enough to do to a runner.
Realize this, if you are not a mechanic /body man/ welder/ designer....you will have to learn or farm out these skill sets. This costs money and time. Now is the time to decide if you want to learn the trades or drive. Learning this stuff has reward but there is no profit. This is the big costs. In the end the most important money is spent on car condition.

    3. You decide you want a 48-52 Rocket. It fits your life and driving style. You want one that is a runner.....not perfect but not junk.
    Search for this car.
Be willing to go out of state. Learn about problems with these cars.....rust areas mechanical quirks...this research is repeated from step one.
Most really good deals are going to come word of mouth.

    4. Know your budget.
A prelimeraly check shows no cars fit your criteria in the neighboring 5 states for under ten grand.....simple....save up 10 grand!

    5. Don't buy the 62 4dr Studebaker Lark of of Craigslist because it was a "good deal". No matter how much you work on it the Lark is not going to turn into a Rocket.

Focus. It will come. You will find it.

    Be proactive.....not reactive.
