overdrive vs non-overdrive

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hivolt5.0, Jan 11, 2012.

  1. Does anyone know if the gear set from a T86 non-overdrive transmission will work in a T86/R10 overdrive transmission?

The reason I ask is I have a T86/R10 in my '57 Ranchero and the cluster gear has several chipped teeth. The guy I bought the Ranchero from has two other standard T86 transmissions with good gears that I can have. Just curious if I could swap the gears from one case to another?

    thanks,

I think the gears are interchangeable. The cases and shafts are different. Take them apart and find out.

    Good Luck

  3. This is just a question.

Wouldn't the OD transmission have different gear ratios that then no OD transmission? If so wouldn't you need to replace all the gears to make it work?

  4. I guess the shaft on the R10 ****** would be longer to accomdate the overdrive portion???

  5. I was wondering the same thing porkn******. I certainly don't mind swapping the whole set if it will work. The rear end gear ratio I have is 3.89:1 if that would make a difference.

Never really compared the two, although I ran a T-86 non OD for quite awhile in a '53 Stude behind a SBC.
No doubt the rear output shaft is different, but it seems to me that as scarce as an OD version is, that it certainly would be worthwhile to open at least one of these non OD versions up along with your O box and start counting teeth!

Why would the ratios be different, wasn't the OD mainly used in high gear to get better gas mileage? High would be 1 to 1 in both the OD trans and the non OD trans. Don't know for sure just asking.

  8. Definitely wouldn't hurt would it. Boy, if they would swap it'd sure save me some money and help get my Ranchero back on the road.

  9. OD trannies normally have different ratio gears than no OD trannies. Sometimes 4th in a 5 speed or 5th in a 6 speed is not 1:1.

Oh you don't have to clarifuy with me, I am pretty good at figuring out who is jerking me around. You never have as I recall. ;)

I have an OD trans out of a 61 wagon taking up space in my garage...I could live without it...hint hint hint...

  11. I'll take that hint!!!!! Wonder what the shipping cost would be.

Without going into the 'Ol Hollander, I would think that if guy used the cluster and main drive gear ,2-3 slider, low reverse slider and the OD output shaft, everything would be Jake. There was usually a hole drilled at the back face of the case for the reverse lock out shaft with OD.

  13. That's kind of what I was wondering and you are right about the hole drilled for the reverse lock out shaft, I saw it last night as I was inspecting the gears.

    All the T 86 guts will transfer to your T 86 ****** with the R 10 O.D.

If I were in your shoes (but I"m not and its always about what you have to spend) I would consider the beefier T 85 with the R 11 O.D. ******.

The T 86, R 10 may be fine for your needs. If you have some freebie donor T 86 ******s then you have the parts you will need so just do some wrenchin and get it all back together.

Again the heavy duty upgrade is the T 85 with the R 11 O.D. if your gonna run it hard.
I also believe that there are more of the T 85s with the R 11 O.D. units availiable.

Check them syncros and the gear end syncro teeth for wear.

    Good luck,Oldmics

  15. Thanks Oldmics! I have a healthy 312 sitting in front of the ****** so a t85/R11 would be the ideal choice that is for sure, and I'd love to put one in there but as with most rodders, money is always a factor. At this point I'm just trying to get the best bang for the buck so if swapping an entire gear set is it then that is what I'll probably do.

I do believe the synchros in my current trans are worn as it would grind a bit if you tried to shift it swiftly and 1st gear would jump out when accelearating. I ***ume this is what caused the worn/broken teeth.

Oldmics has just jarred me into realizing I had a brain fade (senior moment?), the trans I was using and referring to as a T86 was in reality a T85! I ran across several non OD versions, but only one OD.
All the 312's I ever dealt with using a Manual trans had T85. Identify by curved bottom side plate.

  17. My Ranchero originally had a 292 but the previous owner found the 312 in a junk yard and rebuilt it to stock specs with an Isky E4 cam. Most of the T85s I've seen for sale are more expensive than the T86s.

There's a reason they're more expensive: The T85 is a helluva lot stronger trans than the T86. I still remember the first time I saw one with the side plate off. Also it is the base for the T10, with another forward gear added and reverse moved into rear extension housing.
