Overhauling older car trailer

    Starting to replace the old wiring, battery, etc. and I find this thing in the circuit to the electric brakes. I don't know what it is or if I should keep it in the circuitry. Anyone recognize it? Thanks, Harry

    Breakaway box? Yes you should replace it and make sure its wire correctly.
    At least thats what it looks like

    I'd only try to replace it if it's really wanted. Probably a good idea, I've seen them on campers but never messed with one on my hauling trailers.

    Says what it is right there on the lid, depends on condition, usually they are all corroded from never being serviced. Intended to apply the brakes on the trailer should it become separated from the truck

    Actual switch is on the hitch, few different styles with cable to attach to vehicle. Trailer will have it’s own battery, unit takes power from trailer wiring to keep it charged
