Look closely and you will see a cable that is covered with a bike inner tube. It goes through the spoke and then through an A arm and then the two ends are locked together. If you park nose in, with vehicles on each side of you, it would be difficult to move this vehicle. If you have ever tried to load something that has 1 front wheel seized, you know what I mean. This method will slow the thief and make taking the car harder, but not impossible. A good stated value insurance policy is cheap protection for your investment.

My brother had his 1932 roadster stolen from a motel while we were attending a NSRA show. It is a sickening feeling.

^^^^^You mean "AGREED VALUE" rather than Stated value. There is a HUGE difference.

You are correct. I just called to check my policy after your reply. I have agreed. Which is much better than stated. Thanks.

  5. Don't stay in any hotels with a number or color in their name. Good insurance is your best friend.

Park at a hotel with a registration canopy, under the canopy...and put a cover over the carbs

Never had a hotel complain once.

Having been a hotel owner, I offer this free advice. Yes, ask to park under the canopy. The lighted location in open view of desk will discourage the casual thief. However, don't expect the desk clerk to protect your car. The clerk you spoke to at check-in is not going to be there at 2 a.m. The night clerk does not know who the true owner is. The guy getting in your car could be you or a thief. A bold criminal may even go to the clerk and tell them that he is moving "his" car. Not the clerk's job to ascertain ownership. If they call the cops and the true owner was in the car, the owner complains to management and clerk is chewed out and/or fired. Use anti-theft plans along with canopy parking.

FYI: Lots of pros with tow trucks/rollbacks will have fake "repo docs" with them if your car is a targeted car. That satisfies Joe Citizen and the average Barney Fife or rent-a-cop.

I cringe every time I read of an old car being lifted from a Motel parking lot at night.

Turn off gas, run engine a bit, but not to empty bowl.
    Secret electric disconnect.
Park head in to your room door.
Small string (invisible) from car to stacked cans or gl*** to make noise.
sleep on floor next to open window.

Why not just hook up a Pit Bull to the front bumper, if the dog does not eat the person the barking will wake you up. Oh yea, you might have a few complains from people just walking by or just looking a your car.

All the above, but most of all use commonsense. I always try to stay in a better motel and make sure you park in a well lit area. Kill switch and removing the coil wire is a good idea. Do Not park under the awning unless you have permission from someone in the motel. Last year everyone that parked under the awning of the motel we were at got $300 citations for parking in fire lanes. Sometimes towns that host shows, know that this will happen and even though you get the OK from the hotel, the local cops will cruse the parking lot's and issue citations. If it's posted "Fire Lane" you don't stand a chance. The sad fact is that in spite of all the precautions, if someone wants your car they will do everything they can to steal it.

all this and no mention of a cheap car cover with "PT Cruiser" printed on it large.

some good idea in this thread though.

I've been talking these for about 8 yrs now on the Hamb. Yes they work great. Also if you want to scare the **** out of them instead of just shoot them from your bedside. Buy two and put the 2nd receiver in the back seat.
I place the transmitters on the floor of the drivers seat directed straight at the door. As soon as that door opens, pow! You got those slimy *******s.

I have a VERY loud Cadillac set of horns on my F100, coupled with an Olds 'woofer'. (sounds like a Santa Fe Diesel) I jumped a wire from the driver's/p*** door wire (grounding) to a 3 way switch located in an out of the way place I can reach (underneath) that goes to a relay to the horn relay.
When either door is opened, the loud horn blows.

Forgot I had it hooked up one morning, opened the door, "WHONKKK!" and the neighbor's cat jumped down off my chrome air cleaner!
Good thing for the alarm...Kitty woulda been fan meat!

Years ago, my best bud Allen was in the Navy. We had worked on his channeled Model A Coupe for 2 months when he had extended shore leave. He was headed back to San Diego to go aboard the U.S.S.L.A. (USS Los Angeles, Heavy Cruiser)
in 2 days, so we readied the Coupe, packed his gear, and headed down 101 from San Jose.
We stopped in Ventura, at a motel, to leave in the morning after a breakfast.
Al was a fiend about thieves, he had 2 cars stolen in a year!
We parked the Coupe outside the motel room, and before turning in, Al ran a long roll of heavy twine from the Dago axle thru the window, opened just a crack. TIED THE END OF THE STRING TO HIS BIG TOE!
I asked what the 'test' was on that string. :D
Al didn't even smile..."If they grab that Coupe, I'm gonna know!"
I added, "Or go with it..."
Al was very 'practical'...before he shipped out, he sold me the Coupe for a dollar. (pink slip, bill of sale, everything) His sortie was an 11 month cruise!
...Yes, I sold him the Coupe back for a dollar when he returned. Think he still owes me that buck!

I'd say stay at better motels that you still can park in front of the room at. Or in a parking garage. It might be worth the extra expense to find hotels/motels that have controlled access parking where you can park the rig yourself. That gate you have to use a key to open or show the attendant your reservation to get into stands a chance of being a lot more secure.

If you are staying in Seattle the Silvercloud at Lake Union has a room key operated gate on the parking garage, Not a cheap place but if you get on the front side you have a great view and they put on a pretty decent breakfast.

Still most of the thefts of running and driving enthusiast cars from motels seems to happen during big car show weekends when no doubt the thieves have made it a point to go to those towns with a shopping list.

I'd say a car cover and one of those annoying car alarms might be the simple peace of mind items. Stick it under a car cover in the PNW and most folks will just thing it is some sort of BMW under it and blow it off as boring.

I've driven my rods more than 130k miles, stayed way more than a couple hundred nights at hotels, only thing I've lost is a set of reproduction red crown valve caps.
Have fun, don't worry so much!
