Ozzie just rang and is running with no headlights . In fact he got pulled over as I was on the phone with him. Now he cant get it started and is going to try to pop start it down hill . His current location is exit 62 on I 75 north of Valdosta and near Tifton, going to Wally mart to try to buy a bunch of small batteries as he thinks the gen is not putting out any longer. Anyone around that can help him ? He has no volt meter.

Wallyworld will also have a 6v charger & one of those jump-start thingies - he'll need to charge it for first use, but doesn't take too long.

Wallyworld should also have a voltmeter

I don't know anyone in Valdosta anymore...

    Maybe re-flash/polarize his generator??

Voltage reg seems to be fubar. Been on the phone with him for the last couple of hours off and on. He is in the parking lot at Wally worl and has bought some 12volt headlights and a 2 12 volt battery , looked for the marine but nada on the 12 volt. He joked about how amazed the cop was the other day, that he was so calm ! Tonight with all the issues he has had I cant believe it , still taking it like a champ and determined to make it to his destination! Flat Ernie , explain the Flashing or polorizing of the gen?

PM sent - not sure which charging system he has or 6/12 conversion, so sent a PM covering as many bases as I could think of...

Don't quote me on this but I think I remember him telling me yesterday that it was still 6 volt.

I've got a 6V gen and voltage regulator if he needs them. I am working until about 5 today and live in Warner Robins, about 80 miles north of Tifton. 478-954-0531

Just talked to him, he just p***ed exit 414 in Lake City Florida, everything is ok for now, just hoping his battery will last. He said when it does die he has one more fully charged one to go back in. Should be home in 6 hours if nothing else goes wrong.....

Is he running the entire car on the 12V or just the lights? If the car, he may run into ignition trouble if he didn't chant coils...

The turnpike is quicker, but if it were me, I'd take I4 across to I95 around Orlando area - lots more exits, lots more options if he breaks down. It's always 30-45 miles between exits between Orlando & West Palm...

From mm280, it's about 240 miles to the Golden Glades interchange (IIRC) - then probably 10-20 for him to get home

I'd still do I95 - if not at I4, hop over at Ft Pierce...

I'm Back, Made it home with very little battery left for the lights, would turn off the headlights and just have the running lights in the rear alone for miles at a time and when I thought a cop would be around the corner I'd turn them on for a few minutes, Exhausted and tired. Stopped off at brian Busted Knuckles place and met another Hamber Cory there, very hospitable and nice people, Glad to have met them..Will post a bunch of picks and some video tomorrow morning, and a List of things I want to do to the car almost Immediately, First thing is get a Good Radiator, and then get a set of 16" Steelies for it. Wide Whites will come from Diamond Back Radials whe I have the cash. and a 12 Volt conversion and full wiring harness for the car since it Really6 really needs it.

    Ozzie......Zzzzzzzzzzz

The Hamb Rocks!!, all the help and support along the way was so great!, Many of you called just to see how I was and to give me support along the way, Denise was amazing in keeping you all updated I also had a few hours of help from Brian Busted knuckles while approacing and then sleeping at the famed I-75 Georgia Exit 62 Walmart.

I had to run around town and try to return these extra tools i bought and battery etc.. and it all worked out, returned one of the batteries at Walmart along with a bunch of tools at Advanced, and the small lawn battery at Advanced also.....But here are a few noteworthy pictures along the trip. And notice there were 3 Tow trucks!, LOL One from Highway 72East in Alabama, one from the Motel in the morning which took to I-75, then to Honest Charlies ( no help found there), then down 75 for a ways ( I bought Lunch, The Driver Jim was Awesome!!), then the other Driver was from Calhoun, GA to Locust Grove, GA Exit 212, then went to the Radiator Shop called McDonough Radiator and Electric ( Got a T Shirt) and drove back from there, Changing a belt, and fastening the radiator together when the OTHER side ripped open with tie wraps and bailing wire!, then down to florida, OMG what a trip, ask questions... PS, I'll include a few posts with all the pics, and if you can for all you Flathead experts, see the numbers stamped on the flathead, I think they are for a truck 8RT not 8BA, and those water pumps I have, I'd like to get the right set up with the water pumps, so That I can get the one Big belt that ends up looking like a Diamond and goes from the back lower crank pulley, around both water pumps and around the Generator, then the single belt that runs the fan straight up from the pulley. Can this be done if I get the right Water Pumps? and the right Fan Pulley?
Also looking for a rear end gear housing with gears that is a lower gear than what I have. I will post pictures of the bottom of it tomorrow after I take it to a Jet Wash and Wash all the crud from below the car, Hope it's not holding it all together, then the good Hamb folks can tell me if it's OEM, and suggest the right fifferential, I was told that the 56 Ford Automatic's came with a super high gear, like a 3.25 which would be a direct swap out, only a gasket and I'm done, and that would get me way better highway speeds, and then switch out to a nice set of 16" steelies and WHALA!, easy 65-70 MPH without Overdrive!! Anyway,
Let me know what it is I have from the pictures thru PM for parts and suggestions and here for anyting else noteworthy, Thanks again, you, the Hamb Community are amazing people!!

    Ozzie,

Glad you made it - looks like 8RT heads - which are a**** the worst heads for flatheads! :(

As for waterpumps, pullies, & your desire for the single "diamond" pattern belt for pumps & generator + second belt for fan, that won't be as easy. The challenge is the pullies on the pumps - the p***enger car pumps are unique with their lower mounting & different from the majority of other flathead mounts. I'm sure you can have different pullies put on so they're inline instead of offset & will run around the "diamond" - then again, with your mix-matched fan pulley, finding the right one there will probably cure your ills.

  28. Glad you made it.
    Sorry I couldn't do more.

    Denise rocks....as usual.

Ozzie, I'm glad to see you finally made it home safely. You've got nerves of steel staying as calm as you did through all that.

The only real problem with your belt/ pully situation is you have the wrong fan ***embly. The 2 belt system is how th later flatheads came originally & once everything is put together correctly rarely give any trouble. I have the correct fan ***embly for your motor that Id be willing to donate if you can't find one closer to you.

Here's the skinny on the rear. If you'd like to keep your original housing but want higher gears (lower numericaly) for the highway, you should start looking for a rear from a 51-54 ford or 52-54 merc that was originally behind a Ford/Merc o matic transmission. They come in 3:54 or 3:31 ratios. This is the easiest/ fastest way to go. you just pull your axles, take off the 10 nuts holding the chuck in swap the chucks & put everything back together.

The 55-56 ford chucks will bolt onto your housing BUT they take fine spline axles & the 55-56 axles are slighly longer than your corse spline 51 axles. If you want to change the whole rear go for the V8 maverick rear.

All the late model flatheads 49-53 have bolts in the heads & double belts. 49 only had the wide belt.
