Mike, That's a good idea.... assuming I can rope somebody in to drive the truck and trailer. Well.... maybe at least to El Mirage. See ya out there. eh? Fur... It is/was fairly common to just hard mount the rear. As long as the course it smooth.
Hey Bobby, "Tanks 4 sharing Pics & all", I had a good time reading all of the replies. I have a later NATO long tank & the wheel base is about 14' It's pretty long. I want to eventually get it done, I will as as more $ & time permit, I don't even have the room for it @ the moment. It's @ Elmo Rodge's, He's thinkin on gettin outta Dodge by next year, so I should go get outta his way as soon as I can clear up some space. That's why I was inquring about "THEM" wheels. I'd like to have the right look outta the box. That "THEM" thar tank looks great, keep up the good work!
Looking great, I think there will be alot of V4 belly tankers on the salt next year...Shug's going to have his work cut out to keep some of his records... Just a few quick questions.... 1. gearbox - you mentioned cut down C4, are you only using top gear, or are you going to try a couple of gears? 2. are you making a visor to to look out through? On Waynes tanker (the one from photo's I showed you previously) he was cheap and used the visor off a helmet as it was 'approved' etc, and cut down to the shape he wanted.... Cheers, and again well done, Drewfus
Thanks for the update on the tank.........4 banger? Just wondering what block you are going to use. B or C? Chris Nelson Kansas Check the link from this past year.......and click on the Bonneville pix. http://www.svspower.com/
Cyclone, Nice play on words there Im sure you got an A in your creative writing class. LOL I saw that tank over at Waynos house. The skinny one right? That would be nice and slippery if you can fit inside it. Pm me if you really need some wheels, maybe we could do a trade. Drewfus, I am using the full c4, I just got one of those Flat-o-matic tail sections, it shortens the trans by quite a bit. That thing looks pretty serious Im glad your in Australia. Is that a Bob McKinney head? Oh by the way I heard they just made it illegal to ship any vehicles from there to the US no no Im sure of it you dont need to look into it . Trust me. LOL
Not to sure on the head, can find out, that car is being built over San Francisco way.....it will be running next year at B'ville.... We'd love to bring Wayne's car over to race, but that truck of cash you mentioned hasn't made it over here either..... Back to the plan, any more pics/details to share, would love to see more. Cheers, Drewfus
WAAAAY COOL!!! The neatest piece of functional art I have seen posted here. Keep at it, I can't wait to see it finished. Great work! Do you have a name for it yet?
Doing GOOD!!! I've wanted to build one for years. Your's looks surpurb! Like the size of that english wheel. It is huge.
Vint, That's funny you ask.... I realize I have never even thought about a name, but I guess lot's of great racecars had them huh? The "Red head", "The Challenger" ... etc. etc. I'll have to start thinking about that.... Any suggestions?
I for one would be very interested in more photos and/or details on that cylinder head, and the breathing setup on the engine in your photo... is it homemade injection? What cam are you using for the OHC? Am I way off on my assumtions? Very cool stuff, I really like seeing the ingenuity that goes into these saltflat cars! Ben
That's a really nice looking land speed car ,take the tank up to Bonneville or El Mirage this year so the tech inspectors can 'pre' inspect it for you.Plus we'll get a peek at the tank.Remember if you put mud guards on the back wheels you can run it as a streamliner!
The build on that Tank is eerie. My dad built one in the early 50s when he was dating my mom.He never cracked 200 at El Mirage(199 MPH in 1956).My grampa kept bugging my dad about "so when are you gonna marry my daughter"? My dads reply was "as soon as I get in the "2" Club.!" It happened in 1957 with a blazing speed of 204.547 MPH with an unblown Chrysler on Fuel. I was concieved in an old motel in Wendover,Speed Week of 57. I'll get a picture scanned up tonite of my dads tank.It was pretty much a shitbox compared to the build on this page, but he did it with what he had to work with. THEM,,,,please document all of your work,& get mug-shots of all the boys helping you. This is awesome,& thanks for sharing a very special thing. Troy Cagle
BTTTgreat work. I had always wondered about the insides of one . thanks for the pics and updates. good luck.
Bobby, How about the "Saline Queen". Some nose art of a winking hot red headed nurse in a short white skirt with a syringe squirtin' out some love potion. Now there's an idea for ya Bobby Green. Hey! Bobby Green's Saline Queen. I like it! Now do it!
Hey everybody!! I haven't checked the Hamb in weeks, and the day I do, I see my old tank post..... Thanks for bumping it back up. I have been working alot on it lately. I had to cut out and move the whole firewall / roll cage forward 3 inches to make more room for the engine. I skinned the entire area around my head with plate steel to make it super strong and added a bunch of gussets. I have had to machine up a bunch of little stuff to make the banger work with the trans. In the process, I dropped a 1" plate of steel on by big toe and couldn't walk for a week. I now wear steel toes in the garage. The tank will be in the next Hop up. Drew Hardin came out and shot it a few months ago. I am still planning to have it at El Mirage in May. As far as a name? I don't have one yet. I'll let you know when I do, and take all of your suggestions into consideration. Thanks for the interest, I'll take a few more pics tomorrow and post them.
Absolutely great looking project. More power to you. Where in LA are you lacated, I'd really like to come by and check it out. I located in Whittier Send me an e-mail at jerryclassicauto@aol.com if you can. Thanks
