Really? I thought it was all about making sure your vehicle was safe on the road for you and the other drivers around you? Seriously, the state vehicle code and inspection process is about vehicle safety. Registration is about the commonwealth securing the taxes and fees it is legally en***led to and needs to operate effectively. Try not to be so paranoid as to feel they are personally out to get each and every one of us, though sometimes it feels that way. Realisitcally, if you bought something online, or from a private party, or out of state-there's no tax. If you bought a finished car, there needs to be a bill of sale. You legitimately need to pay sales tax on stuff you bought in state from a business or on the vehicle. As long as it applies to everyone, I hate it, but have to concede that's fair.
Geeze, all these problems. I can think of 4 places off the top of my head where I could get a sticker. Two of them you don't even have to take the car ?
Thanks for the opionions and insight. The official Pa. sites will be helpful also. Right now I'm going out to the shop.
I may be wrong, but I beleive you need a Florida address to register the vehicle. It has to be an address that can be verified, not a random address.
I had my fibergl*** 32 steetrod plated in Pa. took exactly one month from time of enhanced inspection. I did my home work before hand. I dont have tinted gl***, have outside fill with metal firewall in trunk, dot headlights and taillights etc. Ago <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
Ago, I did my homework, too, but they seem to be making the rules up as they go along. I followed the rules according to the state statutes, but they insist on making me change things that are not mentioned in the statutes. For example, I have lake style headers, like just about half of the hot rods you see at any given show. She wants me to build shrouds around them. There's no mention of this in the written rules. If the "street rods" are allowed to be hoodless, why are not all exhaust tubes subject to the "Oh, it popped into my brain that someone can reach in & burn themselves on the exhaust pipes of a hoodless car" rule? I already mentioned that my gas tank is not in a cargo hold, but they insist "it must be enclosed in a box." Where is that written? What gas tank in any car is enclosed in a freakin' box! It's already in a box...it's called a GAS TANK! Also, they questioned whether my exhaust have mufflers. They do, but where are mufflers mentioned in street rod requirements (not to mention specific decibel readings)? So, if they're doing all of this subjective malarky, what the hell is the purpose of the inspector? I thought that was his job.
Fleetside, I feel for you, It sounds like you did everything possible. Maybe I just got lucky. I dont know where they make up these rules as they go. the people in Harrisburg dont have a clue. Try to get your state rep. (politician) involved, tell him or her you belong to a big car club that would like to vote for him if he or she is helpful, tell him or her you will spread the good word if to everybody you know if they are helpful. What year vehicle are you trying to register? Ago <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
Wow..this is all good info as I am moving back up to Pa soon. So if my "parts" are ***led in Maryland is there a challenge /cost to simply transferring to a PA ***le? Do the PA HAMB ER's on here have a list of inspection stations that know and understand traditional hot rods?
All this reminds me of the picture I once saw of a T bucket roadster which had the engine covered by a hardware cloth or expanded sheet metal "cover". The pulleys and belts had similar contruction guards on them and the entire exhaust system was covered by the same. The front and rear tires had "fenders" or tread guards on them too. EEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Fleetside, Who/where is this lady supervisor that's giving you fits? I think it was LongT who mentioned somewhere about taking your paperwork to your state rep and having it processed. Sorry to hear about your problems. I sold the T because I forsaw more problems than it was worth. I see alot of regular appearing plates on cars but they are usually dealer or salvage tags, or they know a lick and stick inspector. Others get regular inspections but have an agreement that if stopped you removed the questionable parts such as fenders. As far as driving in Bethlehem without fenders it's because the cops are busy with crosswalk stings or out riding their horses.
Showing how crazy it all is, the hot rod pictured on the PA streetrod plate would not have p***ed a PA inspection until they changed the rules about 3 years ago.
This is all good info and I'm glad it's helping others as well. I probally will go with a regular tag when the time comes. Thanks, Tom.
Well, the supervisor told me that all of the subsequent follow-up/appeals/new pics of corrective work done MUST be done through the enhanced vehicle inspector. She would not let me E-mail the new pics to her or present them in person. I asked. So when I corrected my headers (I ended up wrapping them), he (the inspector) had to send in the pics. He was kind enough to come to my house to check out my work & I just gave him my pics to deliver. He notarized the pics & delivered them in their usual run to Harrisburg. Frankly, I don't even see how you could fit the state rep thing into the process. If there are any further problems, I will pay a visit to him. Right now, I just want to keep things as simple as possible, with the fewest number of people involved. If things go the usual way, I should hear something within 3-4 weeks. In the meantime, I'll just be driving the thing up & down my road. Maybe I'll snap out & go out on Rt. 22 & smoke the tires? Ha-ha (I think)
I ran fenderless for a while. two tickets later I have rear fenders and ront motorcylce fenders that ride in the p***enger seat. I have an inspection sticker now too. my cousin is a cop and siad that they cannot impound your car for now inspection. maybe in philly though. the two times I got pulled over it was because of no fenders. they just gave me a no inspection ticket. now that its inspected we will see this year what they give me since I have rear fenders but not front fenders
Yes, I am one that said go to a State Rep. It worked great for me!! I also said that was before the Enhanced Inspection and I wasn't sure how that would work now. When I did it you would go to the State Rep instead of going to a notary service. That would be after the inspection. If the inspector notarizes and has to send the notarized paperwork to PennDOT that would rule out the rep until maybe after a rejection. Then they might get involved. My local rep has, at least had, in her printed brochure of services automobile ***ling ***istance. Couldn't find any reference to that on her website. Fleetside, I should come over and see your truck in person. The pics you've posted look KILLER!! Bill
Apparently, the state no longer allows the local rep to be involved in the process. There are designated notary services that do the transfer work now. At least that's what Turkeyjerk was told by his enhanced inspection garage and the power-tripping DMV supervisor lady we all seem to be so fond of.
Thanks for the clarification about handling the ***le thru the state rep before enhanced inspection. It is a killer car. Just a shame having him jump thru hoops to get it on the road.
