I think i made a post awhile ago asking who on the hamb was from PA, i got a couple responses but i just now had time to log in after about 3-4 months and forgot most of what i was told. my fault for staying away too long i know.
just wondering who was from pa, what ride or rides you have and if you could give a young dood some advice.
i wont go into details but i have tons of questions i'd like to ask.
i met lullabelle and he kinda' put the whole thing in motion for me as far as wanting to do it, but i've been working too much and havent really made the time to get ahold of him in awhile.
    but anywho!
    back to the subject
i'm just looking for a rat rod that i can learn with
looks isnt important but i want to use it as a daily driver
    so motors trans...etc, IS important.

well i gotta get some sleep but any and all help is much appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

    -Adam

edit..i forgot to mention that mainly i'm looking for places to find parts and bodys...frames...

Im movin to PA to go to wyotech in september. I bought a 54 ford just so I could work on it as a project car while Im down there. Its my first old car so it's dirt cheap and not perfect. Im guessing thats kind of what you're looking for. I found mine in local classifieds believe it or not. I searched the hamb for months and found nothing, then I found an ad in the paper that said "rat rod for sale" and that ended up being the one. just keep your eyes open and dont give up. Maybe even talk to people who are graduating wyotech and dont want to take their projects with them.

i must be a moron, ok that opens me up for bashing hah, but i never heard of wyotech. what town/city is it in?
and yeah, pretty much the whole rat rod style is what i like i'd like something between later fortys to late 50's
old coupes are nice but i dont really have the cash to throw down for a body or any of the frame parts.
as far as wyotech goes though, you have me interested haha
i always wanted to learn how to weld and pretty much if you want to do it yourself thats the basis of most it, in my opinion
    but thanks for responding

I am from northwest Pa. I drive a 39 chevy coupe (have been for 34 years). also a pro street S-10 and a lowered Ford ranger as a daily driver. The "rat rod" idea is cool, but dont forget about state inspection requirements, and if not now, soon, emissions testing. They seem to try to make it difficult to build a cool car. I hear they arent quite as strict in eastern Pa.

I live in a small town near Allentown. I've got a 50 Chevy sport coupe. I also have a 54 Chevy on the way so I'd be looking to get rid of the 50. The only thing needed is to finish some rocker work(rockers included) and driver's floor(also included) but that's almost finished anyway.

It's been a long time since I was in college in Selinsgrove, but there used to be a great yard in Mt. Pleasant Mills.

Im from PA, allentown in fact, and there are plenty of projects around. You have to go into the "bush" so to speak to find the good deals.

I'm in PA, close to Pittsburgh. I have no idea where your town is in relation to Pgh. but you will find lots of enthusiasts and parts connections in the Pittsburgh area.

The yard is still there. All the old stuff is gone and it sucks big time.

If you're really interested in learning and building your own car, I'd suggest getting an idea as to what project you'd like to get into first.
"Rat Rod" is a bit vague and goofy.

Figure out exactly what you like. 50's chopped custom? 60's cruiser? Gasser? 30's hotrod? Taildragger?

And maybe adjust it to fit your budget- if you want a 32 Ford roadster, "reality check"- think about an A with the roof cut off or maybe another make instead. If you like a 49 Merc, maybe look at a shoebox that you can eventually chop or an old Chevy.

Do your homework. Look at an assload of photos. Decide what you'd really be happy with. Then start looking around and figure out what you can afford and what fits with your skill level.

If you at least know what you want to build or buy (style if not exact model), you can start seriously looking. Or at least building it in your head, which is a good place to start. And you can ask questions here of guys with similar cars- like "how'd you do that?".

I'd guess that most guys that post "Dood, I need a Rat Rod" are gone in another 3 months, on to the next trend they read about. Or buying their Grandma's 70's car, slapping black primer, wwws, and red wheels on it (which probably fits better on the OSR board than here).

If you're serious about a car, there are plenty of great projects around these parts. And the HAMB is the right place to be, too.

Just my 2 cents and unsolicited rant. It's great to see someone getting an old car back on the road and learning as they go (as I am too). So I hope it works out for ya.

    Rock On-

Actually i've been wanting to start a project for awhile.
but i waited because i didnt want to spend money at something spur of the moment just because its there to buy. I'd love to get a merc. around 48-53
but i like the ass draggin' sleds. i dont know many terms as far as describing what i want but i do know what i like.
i just dont want to seem like a poser or say something that is completly the wrong term. maybe i think too much. haha
some guys like to restore cars to the way they were when they were new, or close to it.
i'd rather have something that has a chopped roof, and has the "bubble" look...you can laugh but i dont know how else to describe it.
do you call that channelling? as far as wanting to do it for trend..no couldnt be farther from the truth.
i've been around cars my whole life but me and my old man never saw eye to eye on things and he never had the patience to teach me, and he doesnt have a welder or anything like that.
i'm not saying "wahhh my daddy didnt help me!"
    just for the record...
but as far as what i know, its from what i've heard people talk about and what i've read.
i made the post because i really want to get serious with it but i dont know where to start.
party because my finances arent the best, and i dont want to screw myself by getting in over my head with something i'm not capable of doing.
haha sorry im going off on a rant.
i jsut got off work and in the process of moving...but anyhow!

yeah i like all kinds of styles so its hard to decide on just one
but the gasser/taildragger would probably be on the top of my list.
    as far as model/make/year.
that would depend on whawt was avaiable to me and at what cost like i said before.

but as of right now i'm just going to read some more info on here and try to talk to as many people as i can about whatever they are willing to tell me, and whatever advice they can give me.
i just hate bugging people haha
i always feel like a pain in the ass.
course most of the people i talked to on here are nice and encouraging.
but yeah i'll shut up now and just read..haha

wyotech is a school for building custom cars.its located in blairsville, which is about 40 miles north of pittsburgh. If you want to work on cars professionally, it's definitely something to look at but if you just want to be a hobbyist, its probably too expensive. check out www.wyotech.com for more info. theres lots of old hot rods that belong to the students around the blairsville area though
