A guy I know is getting a heart pacemaker.. He is worried about getting near old cars and bikes, especially the ones with magnetos. The doctors have warned to to stay clear of RF emitting stuff like generators , magnetos also give off a large RF field... He also rides an old magneto ignition bike. Any of you here have a pacemaker? Or have knowledge of this problem? Thanks
I got an old friend that still rides a panhead with a Joe Hunt ( not all the time) granted the mag is up front and probably doesn't give out much of an RF field. Don't know if that is any help. Edit damnit: While I am thinking about it my neighbor up north mows lawns and his wife helps. She has a pacemaker/defibrillator unit. Mowers are magneto fired and have zero shielding.
I have a full time bi-ventricular pace maker. The only thing I avoid is arc or mig welding. Never had any problems being around generators, alternators or point and electronic ignition systems. MRI's are an absolute no no. I think it's more of a proximity thing with minor electronic devices. Microwave ovens are safe also unless you get inside. (couldn't resist that one).
I have a pacemaker/defibrillator. As I was headed into the surgery room to get it installed, the tech from St Judes asked if there was anything I wanted to know, so I asked if I was going to be able to use my mig and tig welder. the answer was yes, as long as I stay away from high frequency units (plasma cutters for one). I've had my pacemaker since December 2015 and haven't had any problems. I do avoid plasma cutters, and older microwaves. You also can't go through security screening stations. BigMike
My Dad got this little receiver thing, you turned it on and it had an LED light bar, if I recall went from green to red...have him look into those, in fact it may still be around, if I find it, I'll give you the info. Edit: Found it.. Electro Magnetic field finder Made by Eakes Research Inc Here's some phone numbers 1 888 566 3255 1 605 595 3393
The tech support from the pacemaker manufacturer should be able to give him advice based on his pacemaker model. Gas powered chainsaw is a definite no for me (and I don't mind this one bit). Mine is just an alpha pacer and I do my own ignition tuning on points & condenser and HEI set ups.
I don't have a pacemaker, but I do have "Atrial Fibrillation". My doctor wanted to know what my hobbies were, and when I told him that I raced a car with a Magneto, he said I should make sure someone else did the ignition tuning.
