Hey guys I’m looking for photos of any aspect of a padded top construction. How the headliner was done etc. Thanks for any help, Joe
Are you talking about a Carson Top? There's a **** ton of info on the net and I'll bet there's more than one thread here detailing the construction. EDIT: I found this thread: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/carson-tops-and-other-kinds-as-well.1135358/ Page 2 has scans of an old magazine article that should be of interest.
Yes Carson top, I’ve seen what all I can find with a google search just seeing what all else is out there for info. Thanks
If you have IG search #carsontop also follow customcarcronicle and Kustomrama Most show in progress stuff happing right now or recently
Chicken wire, wired too your homemade frame work, for shape, then you have many places to tie pading and headliner, after cover with top padding n cover.. That;s How I remember seeing it done in the early 1960s
If it’s not a convertible to start; start out by stiffning the frame. An X member is the correct way…
Hello, These months of driving from the OC up to Santa Barbara were some great times. Not only is it one of the most beautiful coastlines around, the local city and mountains make is a true destination place. It has become one of our favorite places to stop any time of the year. The first time was in 1966, in a driving rain storm, after coming South from a long San Francisco road trip. The rain was so powerful that our windshield wipers had a difficult time keeping the rain off. We stopped in the Holiday Inn, Goleta, several miles from the same location we took the California Top photos many years later. The last time my wife and I stopped was in late 2019, just before the pandemic hit the scene and we were locked down. We stopped almost every time my wife and I made any kind of road trip North or coming back home South. The old Holiday Inn turned into a Kimpton Goodland Resort with the cool 60s vibe and completely restyled rooms. Jnaki Goleta has always had some great history to hot rods and drag racing. The first known drag race took place at the old Goleta Airport area and is written about in hot rod history. During the time we spent going back and forth was well worth the various trips. Sometimes, we just stopped for some photos and continued our road trips. Other times, we spent several days on a business vacation with great results. The California Top is a different look at the bulky Carson Custom Car Top. It looked great on a 1934 Phaeton and did the similar job as a Phaeton top, but with some rigidity, lightweight enough to take off for some open air cruising. Https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/friday-art-show-5-6-22.1263314/#post-14473448 When the idea of a hand-made custom top was created for a 1934 Ford Phaeton, the design suddenly took front and center. It was light enough for two people to clip it on and install/remove the California Top. So, it was not that much different than a manual fold top that just sat on the rear area. It was a lot cleaner in design and function. These are some newly found original color slides from a mystery box left at the bottom of a file box we recently cleaned out. These were from an original photo shoot back a long time ago in Goleta, Ca. From the back of an El Camino with my wife driving and me shooting was an experimental way to get some clear action shots with the background slightly blurry, but the Phaeton in focus. Never seen before, even by me since the original photo shoot and magazine article. The reason might have been the Ektachrome color slide film was put into some custom hard shell slide frames and not given to the customer or magazines in the Kodak Ektachrome Cardboard Paper form. You find the nicest surprises in old stuff that needed cleaning out, but was always hidden behind the “important” files…
