Ok so I've ran into a dilemma. I was in the process of painting my 37 Chevy Coupe. I got all the base coat sprayed. While waiting for it to flash, I got called away on emergency. It's been 5 days since base coat was laid out. Can I go ahead and spray my clear on it? Should I color sand it with 1000 grit then clear? Do I have to sand and re spray the base? Help Please

  2. Depends on the paint. I just did a metalflake job on an off topic bike tank. I had to wait and just wet sanded like you mentioned came out fine.

What grit did you color sand with?

You have to sand it, 1000 grit will be fine and then shoot another coat or two of base then clear, most basecoats can't sit any longer than 24 hrs. or the clear won't stick.

I'd scuff it and rebase as stated above, especially if it's metallic paint. Alot of modern paints adhere to their substrate chemically, not just mechanically, that's why most data sheets tell you to rebase coat after 24 hours.

I did the same with R-M Diamont, but it was two toned, so I talked to RM and my paint supplier, I scuff padded the base, and sprayed everything with BC100 which is essentially a clear base coat, then cleared during the correct flash time. Came out fine. If you are using a dark color They recommend BC00 but it costs more, I guess it is clearer than the BC100 clear.

As noted above, have a good chat with your paint supplier, they may have a product similar to the RM bases that murfman describes. At the very least I would sand with 1000 grit before clearing. Really sucks when the clear starts pealing after 6 months and then you have a bigger mess to deal with.
