Paint / Coating for door latches, strikers?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kan't spell, Apr 8, 2012.

  1. What have you used on your door latches and strikers to make them look good as new? I've cleaned all the paint off mine from when someone painted the car and with the finnish on them they aren't going to look any good on the newly painted door jambs.

  2. I used Plastikote hammer finish silver in a spray can for the strikers and latches on my Nova. Gives a nice factory look, and seems to be holding up real well.

  4. I might have a look at that. I needs to be something that can take the abuse from closing the door and not chip too much.

Has anyone tried the Gold Cadmium spray paint from Eastwood?

    Powder coating might work.

I've had really good luck heating things up with a propane torch and dunking it in dirty oil. Repeat 3-4 times and it should give off a black anodized look that holds up really well. My friend tried it on a hood latch and then put it on the buffing wheel to slick it up a bit and it looks rad! Cheap and easy and seems to work really well.

  9. Thanks, I might have to try that.

I'd stay away from powder coating as it is very thick, I have polished mine and then clearcoated with a rattle can. Holds up pretty well and is easy to redo if and when needed after much use

Hammerite is a good choice if you are not worried about it being absolutely stock. I do it sometimes, just depends. Cold galvanizing looks right in some places as well as actually doing a zinc plating. Small kits make this something you can do at home. And don't forget, when you want a black surface, drop whatever still piece you want finished in a container of phosphoric acid for a couple days.

I wouldn't paint them. I'd either wire brush them or get new strikers which are cheap and plentiful and will accent your new paint job with nice new fixtures.

  13. I was looking for a home kit but havn't had any luck. I think I remember seeing something in one of the magazines years ago but don't know witch one. Do you know were I could find a plating kit?
