Im trying to match a color called cotswold gray. Ford and mercury used the color in 40-41. Ive seen a solid and a poly version listed. Went to my local ppg dealer and she couldnt find it with all the codes i had pulled from paintref.com. She ended up calling ppg and they sent her a formula that was supposed to be close. I took it home and sprayed a test panel. Its way too brown. Not even close. Any ideas of who might be able to match this color? What about tcpglobal? Id have to buy a whole quart. Hate to do that if they cant come close to the color.

You would think. I went to two local paint shops. With the correct codes.. One was a matrix dealer, the other a ppg dealer. Neither one could do it. I didnt have that formula though. Thanks! Ill try that

  6. the old formulas don't really work with the new tints.
you can use the quart if it is wrong as a base or for any spot that doesn't show, so it won't be a waste if it is wrong.

Is that the original paint on your Merc or a older repaint? What ppg gave you was a computer generated closest possible match matching their old toner formula to current epa friendly toner files . A total shot in the dark and if your car has been repainted , your chances of matching a factory formula to it are a million to 1 !! The formula mgtstumpy posted cannot be mixed because the toners are no longer available. Your going to need to find someone who is very good at tint and blending and mixing custom colors. Of course finding a person with this skill level is going to be very hard because most current painters do not tint and blend and most paint jobbers do not want to get envolved because it is time consuming and most customers do not want to cover the cost . good luck Larry

Larry, the merc in the pic isnt mine. Im trying to pick a color to paint my roadster. I like this gray and another gray called tunis gray. Another early ford color. I spent hours at the ppg store trying to get a sample matching either of these colors. They are all either too light or too brown.

I wanted a 40 Lincoln Zephyr color called Capri Blue, so I took a old color chip with me to my local supplier and came up with a Nason color out of their color chip book that matched perfectly.
Do not remember what Nason called it but I got the code printed out on a sticker stuck inside the trunk for future reference.

  11. Look for a BASF Paint Distributor in your area and call and ask if they have the full line of color samples or swatches on hand for their paint. Other major paint brands may also have them. Previously my friend in South Dakota owned a state of the art body shop with his own mixing bank system that had literally thousands of paint swatch "fan decks" in cabinets that I would choose my colors from. They were in each color range with about 50 swatches sized about 2" X 8" in each deck like this.

I picked the color for my '32 Ford pickup this way. I used single stage since I don't like the look of base/clear on an old car. Since I moved to Arizona my local BASF dealer has a similar system of "fan decks" that we have used to match the paint on my motorhome perfectly because there was no way of knowing what the paint code was. We just carried the closest deck out and laid it against the original color until we found a perfect match, which was especially useful in full natural sunlight. You could look at the original color you want and pick one that matches it this way. Call a few of these people to see if they have them or if they could refer you to a body shop that does.

Thanks man, im actually back at the paint store now. I went through most of thier swatches and found a color pretty much identical to cotswold. Its actually a catepillar industrial color. So shes mixing me up a sample to spray in JE shopline. Which is what im painting the car in

  13. Great! I know how hard it is to pick a color that works. Dark grey is tough because they usually have some other tint that makes them look brown or blue. My mix is tinted with almost all black with a small amount of white and a touch of yellow oxide.
