Hot Rods Paint color question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, Jul 1, 2017.

  1. Hi Guys on my 56 Chrysler Windsor.I am kicking the idea of maybe painting the roof white and the rest of the car gray. I am not sure weather to go back to the factory gray or make it metallic grey. Should I do the roof in white or just paint the whole car grey. Inputs are welcome. Thanks Bruce. 005.JPG

Bruce, either way is good. Tri-color was in style when your car was built. Do it. You can always paint the roof over if you get tired of it.
Maybe one of the photoshop guys here can help. I'd use a metallic charcoal, but, hey! what do *I* know?

Bruce, It's a big car and needs something to break it up, so I like the idea of an off-white roof (think Ford Wimbledon White) and non-metallic Grey for the rest. JMHO.:)....Good luck, it's always a tough decision.

Something else to consider, if it's hot where you live a white roof will help you stay cooler inside the car .

Plus it will look nice too.

Check out Toyota Cement or Hyaundi Sprint Gray those would be a nice gray for your car. If you go with Toyota Cement have whoever mixes the paint leave half to blue out of the mix and it's even better then. We did that on a motorcycle once and it was beautiful.

I would for sure throw another color on the roof white is a great idea. Somebody mentioned Ford Wimbledon white that is a great suggestion. Timeless color that looks great.

Also the current Ford Code YZ white or Chrysler Code PW7 would look nice as well you might check those out too but I'll second the Wimbledon white.

Paint color is a very personal thing but you'll never go wrong using factory colors on a near-stock car like yours. It will always look "right".

Bruce, here's a Plymouth we did 20 yrs. ago with dark metallic gray on top, & basic gray bottom. Dark on top, light on the bottom seems to make cars appear lower, to me at least ... '56 Ply wgn.jpg

I don't know, I think if it was mine I'd 3 tone it. Kinda like it looks now with that salmon insert in the trim but a white top, and a medium metallic grey (not too dark but not silver either) on the bottom. I always liked the Mopar tri-tone paint jobs, real 50's over the top styling.

Notice I said "salmon" and not "pink". Might be the same color but salmon is more masculine;).

Gray is for primer....paint it some bright colors. This is a start, although the tri color scheme is not the same on your car.

I think I would lean towards a darker metalic charcoal grey, whatever scheme I decided on.
...and I wouldnt rule out something like this to ****e it up a bit as well???

Heres a grey/black that might help if you can visualize, and/or decide whatever you want to do on the stripe???

Look at a Wimbelton white roof and Kirker Carbon fiber metallic for the body. The Kicker carbon fiber metallic has lots of co**** metallic in it. This is the combination I used on my 49 Buick dash. The part that goes around the speedo was white also. 49 dash.jpg

I was thinking the same thing on the grey, gonna look like a big ole battleship.:D
But hey it's yours Bruce, color is a very personal thing. Do what makes you happy.:D
Two, or three tone with at least one of the colors having a little sizzle would do that big land yacht justice IMO. Keep us updated Bruce.

You are keeping the pink side part right? One of my favorite things is pink!! White top, gray main body with pink accent= neat, and I am not even close to being a Mopar guy!!

  27. Tri tone would be perfect for the big Chrysler.
White roof, pink on the insert and dark gray with maybe a hint of pearl mixed into the gray.
    Will look spectaular.

3 tone paint jobs were in style in 1956. I think your Chrysler would look good that way. White top gray body and pink or salmon trim. In other words the same as stock with a white top.

They always used white and black or white and charcoal gray plus a flash of color for the 3 tone effect, with very few exceptions.

For best effect use the original 1956 Chrysler paint colors including the white. I don't know why but original colors set off a car like yours the best. I have seen cars similar to yours painted in newer colors, compared to original colors, the original colors look 10 times better.

The only exception would be an all out custom paint job. But if you are picking colors from a catalog pick them from the 56 Chrysler page.

  29. The white top is a no brainer. Yes it's a 4-door, post but the shape of the roof and gl***, the trim, all are styled with the top being separate. I would go so far as to suggest the window surrounds in white also. I love gray metallics if they're dark enough to not be considered silver. But I'm a little torn in the case of mid 50's cars which were usually non-metallics. If you really like the metallic idea, then go for it by all means.

I think you should consider something still cl***y like the dark gray but with a touch of color and pop. I'm feeling it in a deep red, oxblood, and maybe a light vanilla/ivory top and fin stripe (mostly white, though).
Your interior colors are also a factor that has to be considered. It doesn't have to match but it shouldn't clash either.
