The current silver color of the coupe was predicated on a deal I made with the painter who had some extra silver paint which saved me quite a bit of $$$$.
Now I want to paint it a 40's or early 50's traditional color. Maybe a inky dark blue (flat?). What do you guys think? Any photoshop help would be appreciated.
    Thanks. DD

  2. I like mid-night blue myself. But I don't think you can get the affect with flat or satin paint, its normally a metalic but it could be done with black paint and blue pearl I suppose.

Your idea for inky dark blue in a flat would probably also look Ok. But I figured I'd just throw out another idea for ya.

  3. i dont know destructo, that is one mean lookin car. i understand about you wanting a 'trad' color tho. id say gloss dark colors. even dark green would be realy cool and trad looking.

A '40s-'50s color would NOT be flat. Flattened paint is a "tradition" of today.

  6. yea is a new millenium tradition for sure.

if I was going to go green and wanted a traditional color I would go with forest green like they had on the '55 Fords.

Leave the body silver and paint the wheels a color... It will really change up the look of the car.

And if you don't dig it, it's really easy to change back!

I gotta ask, when the hell did flat and satin finishes become a part of "real" traditional hot rods? I lived that era and the only FLAT colors I ever saw was black, light gray, and red oxide primer. All others were gloss, whether sprayed or brushed ( which was quite popular in the late 50's) Same with rusted out POS cars. Never saw any of those either unless I was in the junk yard scrounging for parts. I really think if you are going to be true to actual history of hot rodding, you need to investigate. And actually, I think your Model A looks great as it is, with maybe the addition of some scallops, flames, or just some worthy pinstriping.

I like the silver too. How about keep the feel of the silver color and go with Dove Grey or a grey that was available in the 30's and 40's?

Love the stance on that car. So squatty!

I know everyone says the "flat" is not traditional but I think it is in a way. My 31' is satin "Hunter Green" for this year. All of the streetrodders at the shows say the same thing. "Your paint reminds me of the old faded paint our cars used to be." I don't think they made them "satin", I think the paint faded (like all old paint did) and they couldn't afford the big money, hand rubbed laquer jobs when they were young. They were busy throwing their money into the latest speed parts!
Your ride looks great silver but if you want something different checkout some of the browns. I seen a coupe that had a real low gloss in a brown and it looked dead on!

No offense intended, coolbreeze1340, but that's not true. Even if the paint was thin and had the primer showing through, we still waxed them up. A dull paint job showed laziness. Even if you had a primer spots, you still waxed the remaining paint. Back in the '50-'60s, we used words like Clean or Sanitary to describe a nice hot rod. Satin or flattened paint is traditional. 21st century traditional, that is...

  13. Phil is right on this one.

If the street rodders are saying that it reminds them of the faded paint on their old cars they are just saying that they were too lazy to wax their car. Flat paint doesn't resemble oxidized paint anyway.

Traditional rods have always been work, they were work when they weren't traditional yet and they are work now.

There may have been someplace somewhere in the US that primer was considered smooth. But it wasn't considered smooth in the West anywhere north of Monterey.

Anyway this has been hashed and rehashed. If you want to paint one flat by all means paint one flat. Just try not to confuse the new comers to the sport.

I like the current silver a lot. I also like B***'s bare metal model A. Just remember a dark color will hide the lines & will also make the car look smaller.

It's hard to tell when "back in the day" all they had was black and white. You've got a really sharp car... the proportions are right on. I think this car would look great in a deep black.

    Thanks guys.
I was drawn to the silver because most of my mental images of 50's hot rods are in grey-scale from all the B&W photos dating back to the origins of racing. Now, most modern cars are silver, black, or white. It just bugs me when a BMW (or any other make/model from this decade) with a similar color pulls up next to me.
Your ideas are great. I'm encouraged. Thanks. DD

  20. There is a difference between you and that Beemer driver. You got it goin' on bro.

What ever you do will be fine just as long as its what you want to do.

  21. All kidding aside, I like your car and I like the silver... Especially with black wheels and etc.

It's about perfect as it sits. The only color I would change it to would be black (gloss).

I think the one thing that bugs my behind is the guy that says he is going to build a 50's/60's style car and paints it Viper Red. If you are going to pick a style, stick with it all the way. Start looking through paint books from the 50's/60's and choose a color for that period. The small town I grew up in at that time period had the usual old cars. If it had paint it was a plus. If it had primer spots it was cool. And yes you still waxed the paint that was there. Wheels and hubcaps usually didn't match from front to rear unless your dad runs a parts store. There were some customs wheels available but they had to be mail ordered and bought two at a time according to your pay check. I can remember putting a Muntz 4 track on lay-away at the new K-Mart until it was paid off. The city boys seemed to have the nicer cars with the custom paint jobs. Me, I had the baby moons with port-a walls and was just as cool.

I really like the silver, and would keep it as it is, and as suggested, maybe change the wheel color for a different look. That could easily change back, because it looks pretty damned good as is.

That's not Foose silver, that's Watson silver. Nobody would ever post Foose silver on the HAMB!

    Here's my options....

    >>Dark Blue is cool but lumps you in with a bunch of others.
    >>30's or 40's Ford Grey either tractor or car. Keep the same look but more old timy
    >>Dark Maroon like Navarro's or Walker Morrison roadsters. Looks great with black wheels.
    >>Black. Can never go wrong with shiny black
    >>Silver...exactly like the one you have. Leave it!

I see a lot of people mentioning brush painting the car. While I love the look and feel of them and plan on doing it with my '33 I don't think he should bump down the quality of his car when it's just so nice as it is. I personally would leave it but if you are not proud of the color, then well I'd love to see it and original Ford Grey so that the car's look is not lost but updated and we'll all still recognize the car when we see it.
