That's exactly what I would have guessed of your last Pic. Just a restock supply. I demo-ed some of the shop line clear when it first came out. My local PPG rep. Basically described it as a " watered down " version of dc3000/4000. Depending on which version you bought. I think Shop Line was supposed to be an improvement over the Omni line. I never really cared for it. They're both fine for race car/bike, rock buggy type stuff. But I'd wouldn't spray them on anything I actually owned and liked.
If your not die hard set on that Porsche color. You could scuff the firewall and switch over to an HOK KBC. Or blend up something similar in HOK. Prior to Shimrin2, ppg/deltron was pretty similar cost wise to HOK. HOK was probably actually slightly higher at the time. But since then ppg's prices have triple or quadrupled, in most cases. While HOK hasn't even doubled.
Unfortunately, I am dead set on the color. I spent a lot of time looking at colors before I decided on the Porsche color, and this is most likely (but who knows, right?)going to be my last project and I want it to be the best I can make it. By the way, my nephew finally got me a price on the Matrix, and it is more than double the Restoration Shop price. It came in at just under $1500. Restoration shop is looking better and better!
I'd just buy a quart ( or smaller ) at first. And, do a spray out card or speed form. To see if you like it. Because, being an off brand, it may not be any better of a match than omni would. I once bought a probably very similar colored red. To what you want, in Omni, for a roadrace bike. It was so f'ing far off from the DBC color. It wasn't even usable. Still on the self, probably 15yrs old. Just Don't get yourself stuck with 5 quarts of something like that.
That's a great idea. I've read here that people have been pleased with the restoration shop line, and don't recall seeing a problem with match up, but a sample would be a good, and reasonable cost way of finding out. Thanx
I wonder how many people are matching modern paint colours when they are buying from TCP. Their specialty is matching old formulas that can no longer be mixed. I have heard complains about their available pre packaged colours that they mix large batches of them and don't match from batch to batch. Do you know if there are any variants available for the colour you are after as that can make a huge difference in the colour. I would definitely only buy a small quantity to start. That's another advantage of actually buying from a store that adds to the cost is most will make make sprayouts for you so you know it matches.
There are no variants that I can find. Same color and code for several years. They don't sell anything smaller than a quart unfortunately. I was hoping to just get a pint to test for color match.
I was painting a 67 Camaro back in 85 or so, for a guy who wanted it in Ferrari Red. Back then it was around 4 or 500 a gallon. We looked through the color charts, and found a Chevy bright red, that almost perfectly matched, for around 175 a gallon. You can save a LOT if you aren't locked into a specific color, esp. if there are others available, so close you really can't tell!
A regular automotive paint store can mix down to a 1/2 pint. Even touch up bottles I’d be tempted to get a small amount and do some sort of spray out or small test panel. Have the paint store shoot that with their color scan equipment. Sometimes weird things happen. Had a ford color come up with an Audi color for the best match.
Paint is something that you cannot re-sale once it is out of the can. With that being said, paint will make the biggest impact over most every other item. I see guys complain about the cost of paint while spending 1,200 to 1,500 bucks, or more on a fancy intake system, that they will have to rebuild. I see that the cost of paint will prevent many from just doing their own paint jobs, because the cost of materials is to high to waste on learning to paint.
OK. So w/o re-reading thru all 8 pgs of this thread, who, if anyone, has used UreChem paints? https://www.thecoatingstore.com . I was talking to Dylan, owner of RRframes, at the Btt50's, about some of his cars' paint(s), esp the HolyGuacamole. Real bright lime. . Anyways, he said while he doesn't paint the cars, his painter is *very* happy w/the paint, so are his customers, since it has held-out against color-fading, chalking, etc. & appears it's actually affordable - even for me... ! Looks like it'll be my go-to choice, since it seems PaintGuru doesn't do paint anymore... ;( ;(. Also curious for those who may know, is it known by another name? Knowledgeable painters please weigh in??? TIA. Marcus...
