ok, so this has probably been asked before , i have found no positive answers,,
i want green engine paint , seems the latter flathead green seems dark , I like the lighter green that seems to be on A's but I have found not much on color choices , the bill hirsch color looks good to me but id hate to spend 50-60 bux and have it not be it ,,
anybody know what I'm talking about or am I just being a nutcase ,?

Rattle can paint will fall off when you spill gas on it. I paint motors just the same as a car. epoxy primer, and 2 part urethane paint. lasts forever. And, at a real paint store you go to the green page in the book, several pages to look at, pick the one you want, they mix it up

I’ve used bill hirsh paint numerous times and have had great results. Last time I got paint from them I asked why they didn’t have color chips and there response was if you know what car you are restoring then that’s what paint you get, my response was I’m a hotrodder not a restorer and I would buy a paint if I liked the color and didn’t care if it was a Hudson, packard, Nash etc.etc.color. My avatar 32 sedan has a small block painted with bill hirsh 30’s Buick grey.

Bill Hirsh paint is enamel. Wont hold up to gas...oil...brake fluid, etc. Use real paint

Painted many an engine block with air dry spraying enamel and still there years later. No hardener. Don't use spraycan enamel except for proper engine enamel.

They've been selling paint to a fussy client base for forty years. There must be something okay about it. Like everything else with paint, I expect prep and curing will affect your results.

Detroit green looks a lot better on your truck than it did on a 8-71 Detroit I used to drive, not sure I could paint anything that color after driving that truck.

  17. The key to driving a truck with a Detroit is to slam your hand in the door first so you are mad at it…

I have a quart of Detroit green here for when I get to swapping engines in the convertible

Those old two strokes never stayed green for long. They had a way of turning themselves black quite quickly...

A old truck mechanic I knew once told me the way to keep a Detroit from leaking is to paint the engine 20 times . It seals the gaskets to the block lol . He was quite a character lol

If the Hirsch paint is cured it lasts a long long time. A few heat cycles and it hardens pretty tough. While not in the habit of laying thinner rags on finished engines they were generally resistant to normal usage, minor spills. 14 Packards can't be wrong. ;)

  24. I wanted desperately the lighter green that I believe came on the 8BA engines.

Research led me to a standard green offered by many manufacturers called "Alpine Green"

I found a tone that I liked and had it mixed up in auto paint rattle cans by a local paint supply shop.

The new ceramic paints are pretty resistant to gasoline, especially DupliColor's.

It seems some folks don't like my opinion of rattle can paint, so how about reason # 2, just like Trix, rattle cans are for kids ! :D. When I was a kid, I painted lots of bicycles with rattle cans. Even a mailbox or two. 5 years ago I painted the exhaust pipes on my avatar 34 with flat black rattle can stove paint, its mostly all gone now. I understand if you do not have paint supplies in stock it would be expensive to buy reducer, hardener, and paint for one job. I have the stuff, so for the best results thats what I use.
