Paint guys.another Q. RM Paints?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tman, Jun 24, 2004.

  1. Any of you spray or deal with R-M Paint? I have sprayed PPG products mostly. My boss has always dealt witht he local RM Jobber. He hasnt sprayed anything in a long time but decided to spray a frame for a pal/customer of his/ours. He had me go to his "friends" that sell RM. I got a nice High-build primer for him, should fill the pitts and grinder marks nicely. I didnt look at the bill for the stuff until I got back to the shop.......$160/gal for the primer, the activator made it a cool $200 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF???? I have been spraying Omni MP 182 at a retail of around $70 bucks or so a gallon! I am just curious what the retail of the RM really is. The Omni does an amazing job, I cant fathom why the Rm would be 2xplus better? My boss freaked when he realized he spent $200 on primer, I didnt have the heart to tell him what our COST was on the Omni [IMG]

omni is cheap. price out the ppg line of primers. $$$. the good stuff cost. my problem i like HOK as far as paints go, but hate their primers. went round and round with trying a few different recently. was told not to mix ppg with hok for some reason by 3 reps for both companies. they weren't trying to sell me ppg paints as they know that now that price has dropped a bit i prefer HOK. well i tried a newer high build from keystone that i had heard alot of good about and so far i have reeeeaaaalllllyyy liked it. was very surprised that it's only around $100 a gallon( got a hookup and got it for 80) i've sprayed hok, ppg, and nason over it on some test panels and put 'em all in the sun to try to get a reaction, as i don't want that to happen on a car, even though i talked to alot of people who were using before hand who said they had never had a problem. no problems with any of those brands. this stuff is thick to. like spraying liquid bondo if you don't thin it a little. almost have the '55 plymouth covered in 4 coats took a little getting used to because it's so thick and i've sprayed it from two new guns i've never used. getting used to a new product and new equipment*****s. back to the subject at hand RM has a good reputation but i've never saw what was so special about it. for the money i think their is better stuff to be had. my old auto body teacher loved it for his high line stuff and dupont for the lesser. we sprayed a lot of imrom back in the day. i've got some omni but have yet to use it because even the reps say not to mix it even with the ppg line because there are the occasional problems. i'm sure people do it all the time it's just one of those things. kinda like how i love Nason clears. have used them over most everybodys bases with no problems. if you want to talk pricey PPG's tintable corro-resist primer(ncp272) depending on how you have it tinted can be well over 300 a gallon. and their base/clear get worse. thats why i avoid it now. better stuff around for the price...ken....

  7. Thanks for the 1st hand experimenting! thats what I am looking for. For the record, I am Spraying a PPG Industrial Single Stage Urethane for a topcoat. AUE300. I will report how is turns out for a cheap driver. The stuff is also used in their aircraft line so I know its durable!

  8. Wear a good mask TDUDE....all that stuff is bad for living........ [IMG]
aroud here the paint stores try to rip you the biggest**** they can...Ive heard stories of 800 1200 dollars for a complete****ortment of supplies and materials to do a job.
I guess Im just outa touch sinc I havent really "painted" much in ten years. I dont even own an HVLP gun!

  9. Yeah Kenny, I wear a good mask. I know what you mean, when I first asked my paint rep about materials to paint my wheels, he whipped out a $300 price tag. In reality the Omni cost me closer to $100 and I "borrowed" a cup of clear from a pal.

And SICKens is owned by PPG, at least they were last I heard... [IMG]

It's the*****ing government's fault.. Well, that's the excuse from the makers anyway.
Like prescription drugs and mandatory insurance, paint has become a government controlled "prescription" product and they change the allowed prescription regularly and the makers take the grief out on us users.

Someone's getting real rich out of the deal, count on it...
I wonder if there's a record of which politicians have (PPG) paint stock in their personal investment portfolios?
