I was messing around painting a couple of fenders for a friend, and I for got to cover up some chrome pieces I had laying around. Anyhow a good amount of overspray got on to the parts. They have been sitting there with paint on them for months now, and I just realized it. What would be the best way to get the paint off and not totally damage the chrome finish?
Don't take my word for it, but I have seen sign guys use Easy Off to remove graffitti from construction site hoarding. If it'll take spray paint off a painted surface and not do damage I would think that it should work on chrome. DEFINITELY try a small test first, work quickly and be damn careful.
Ive discovered that 0000 wool saturated in carb cleaner works well gettin right down to the brass on radiators!Im guessing itll do the same on chrome and stainless..Ive found that minutes of masking saves hours of cleanup...after you cut and remove with a solvent (carb cleaner) youll have to remove the film..a metal polish should kill 2 birds with 1 stone...Hope this helps brrroo..
How about the thinner you used for the paint - shouldn't hurt the chrome. I wouldn't use steel wool - it scratches.
I guess this seems a little funky conpared to everyone elses answer, but Meguiars makes an overspray clay bar you could try.
