I've been using lacquer all my life and I'm still happy with it but this is a question for all the guys out there that use Urethane Clear. I'm doing some Kustom work on a car and need to use Urethane clear. What kind of clear is everyone using? Thanks

    Hi
I use PPG DC3000 on small job,it's a spot clear, dry very fast.I use their SHOPLINE and OMNI brand too, they are cheaper but works fine for me,easy to polish.Don't know if the 2021 is still available,it was a very good clear for complete job.Hope it'll help.

  3. I used Ditzler (ppg) urethane clear over a lacquer paint job and mural a number of years ago.
    I was really impressed.
I never had to wash or wax the car. Just a hose and wet rag were all that was needed to make it slick and shiny again.

They say to NEVER put urethane over lacquer because the two paints shrink at different rates, and will eventually peel.

For me the key to success was to let the lacquer dry and dry and dry before topcoating with the Ditzler clear.

I waited about a week to ten days between lacquer "episodes" and then another week or so before the clear. I figured that 99% of the shrinking was finished by then.
I got about 15 non-garaged years in the sun out of that paint job before the clear started looking weathered.
It probably would have lasted longer if I had waxed it or sheltered it.

That is a lot longer than I would have gotten out of a lacquer clear finish even if I waxed the lacquer regularly.

HC7600 DuPont 2K Clear Urethane over their Chromabase basecoat. Then color sanded and buffed (13 laps around the car).

I was a little disappointed in the depth for the first year. It was shiny and slick as glass, but lacked that deep wet oil look until it had cured about 16-18 months. I rebuffed it over the winter and used some of the new Tech Wax on it and it really looks good now.

I once had a friend that bought about 2 cases of that from Walmart to paint his whole 67 Caddy. You can't polish a turd! And he worked at a body shop!

Anyway, I usually use PPG's DC4000. It lays out real well from me and cures like glass. I have used the OMNI Quick Clear and certain others with the same success. DuPont's ChromaClear is also a nice product, I've used that a few times.

I think they are all good ppg dupont kirker valspar shit there are so many now. The only thing i have found is the hardness of the different brands and part numbers. I cant tell you what i used on my 34 cause i cant remember but it was ppg and it was a bitch to sand cause it was friggin hard. when i got it done it looked good. I didnt paint my coupe just because i got a good deal and they used dupont. Looks nice and really looked good going down the road last night while i pondered the check:) My new 3000 mile harley electra glide has the shittyist clear coaT IVE EVER SEEN. iTS SOFT.. dam caps lock. now i do know that mixing has a lot to do with hardness and even harley fucks up from time to time so who knows.

Has anyone else successfully put Urethane Clear over Acrylic Lacquer?? Any problems doing this, if you wait a while for the lacquer to shrink and also sand it smooth...

    barthmonster-
if enough time has passed you can spray uro over lac...........but if the lacquer is fresh you cant............lacquer is an air dry material and it takes time to dry......if you put fresh air dry under hardened dry....yep...trouble......PPG makes a uro clear for this its dau-75 with dx-80 hardner..it was designed to go over lacquer....that is a safe solution....if you want to go lacquer clear.......get ppg 468 high performance clear with a qt of dtl-16..........if your state allows you to spray lacquer.............if not use the dau-75
