My question to you body guys is -------- Can any of the new waterborn paints be used at home without special drying equipment or are the days of painting your own car in the back yard coming to an end ?

The shop i work at is on the verge of converting in a couple of weeks. It does require alot of air movement to dry waterborne bascoat.New fans must be installed in the booths to increase air flow. Also little portable hair blow dryer type fans are used to further dry the paint.but they blow cool air.In our area in texas u have to take a class and get a license to even purchase current urethane paints and clears. This is why i spray all my shit with flat rustoleum!!!!haha plus all this paint is high dollar now and i cant afford it!

I just sprayed a Honda bmpr and the paint code was only available in the waterbourne system. I guess its their way of pushing us solvent boys over to water. Anyway... booth doesn't have the extra dryers (would be nice tho) so I used an air blower to speed up the drying (still real slow). Garage is possible, but they are definetely making it harder and harder. Airflow airflow airflow

It will depend on the humidity in your area as well. High humidity areas will require more air flow and slower drying times because the air is already saturated with water making it more difficult to evaporate. Low humidity areas will require less air flow and will have faster drying times as the air will suck the moisture away from the surface much faster. There is nothing special about the drying equipment for waterbourne paints you just need to keep air flowing over the surface or wait a long time for it to dry.

Sovent based products still have some time. Until the paint mfgs come up with a workable primer, clear coat, and single stage, the only thing waterbased that is working is base coat. One still has to lay them on a solvent base and cover them with a solvent clear. The EPA with it's new NESHAP law has tightened a bodyshops regulations on the amount of VOC's emitted into the air but mandating nothing but water based paints, at least nation wide, is still a ways off. And these new regulations are not really all that much hassle to come into compliance with and none of it deals with the paints themselves. Right now it is all about protecting the painter and the enviroment.

Hey,

I first tryed ''Tree Hugger Kool-Aid" (waterborne) in 1974, and it's as big a bunch of shit now, as it was then! As per the usual "govmant" fasion, they want to do to the paint business what they have done to the automotive business! It does work in an automotive factory, where you have total control over material, time and temp., but do you have any idea what a booth the size big enought to shoot a Lincoln Town Car limo would run?

For the home shop it's gonna get real tough for all but the ideal conditions, to shoot a complete. You still will be using a solvent based clear, they have introduced waterborn primers and sealers, but I'd rather walk through hell on Sunday than use a waterborn product on raw steel! You could panel paint your home shop job, providing you can heat the area, and provide necessary air flow of the waterborn product.

The shop I work out of got hit two weeks ago by the S.C.A.Q.M.D. (smog Nazis of local air resources board & EPA) we've got thirty days to remove all solvent based enamel & acrylic. No cleaning of spray equiment with lacquer thinner, acetone only, and removal of all non HVLP spray equipment. Next month they promissed to return with the ticket book!

I suspect, as the EPA program grows a complete set of teeth, it will, much like the federal mandated 55mph. speed limit in the 70s ,become fiftyone states wide.

I shoot waterbased base on occasion....just for graphics mostly...and I'm not a fan. I have a hair dryer at my side to speed up drying before changing colors....
The day I can't buy solvent based paint products will be the day I stop painting.....

I just bought all the paint for my project and I had to BEND the truth to get some solvent based paint from them. It's all about money and control as usual. Make people buy new cars because it cost too much to restore their old one and then collect taxes and annual tags. what to do?

The jury is still out on how well it will work for the hobbyist. As already mentioned, getting it to dry will be the biggest hurdle. WB needs a lot of air flow to get it to dry quickly. Now that may not matter much for a hobbyist because time isn't money. So if you have patience, there are some advantages for you. Coverage is incredible so you don't need a buy as much paint, it's fairly easy to apply and repairability is easy. For the shops, color matches have been very good. Most WB bases require the use of a dedicated spray gun with a 1.2 tip setup. One drawback is shelve life, depending on the brand you are looking at anywhere from 6 months to 3 years tops. Thats at room temps. If this stuff ever freezes it crap. FWIW, solvent base will be around for years to come just like lacquer was. Heck I think PPG is still producing DDL.
