paint removal

    ok my car has allot of surface rust and what paint is left has a few layers. paint is cracked,chipped in areas and has rust where the metal was showing ,80 grit isnt doing much,should i get some stripper and go to 50 grit

    If you have a locking DA sander, then the 80 should work fine. If ya don't know then look at the bottom where the pad screws on and it will have a sliding ring that has a tab that will slide into a notch in the shaft. If you aren't using a DA sander then it will take forever to sand paint off. You will probably need to grind it off. For this I would recomend a palm grinder with 24 grit. If you are carefull to keep the grinder as flat as possible you can get a majority of the paint off and finish it with 80 on a regular sander (DA). Another cool item is a plastic sponge looking wheel from 3M that you can put in a die grinder if you have access to one of those. They do a real good lob of paint stripping with out removing any metal. I personally don't like chemical strippers, especially after doing my enitre car with it. That's some nasty toxic **** and it takes multiple applications if your paint is thick.
