Painted bumpers and Grille

  1. It's your car, do what you like! My 2 cents-silver would look a little better, until you can chrome em'. Where on earth did you come up with that paint color ;-)[IMG]

I'm not sure what your budget or your likes are. If you like the car the way it is....leave it, but an alternative to chrome is prepare the parts as best you can, track down a very good air brush letterer or artist, someone that has done race cars, and check the cost of having your parts airbrushed to look like chrome. Some jobs look so good it is tough to tell it's not really chrome......just a thought...... if the painter is good, it will not be cheap, but I'm sure cheaper than having the stuff chromed.

I like Wizards Turbo Cut for cleaning chrome, there's a guy on the HAMB that sells it if your local automotive store doesn't carry it. It's cheap and it smells nice, works great on chrome.

Here's the picture I show everyone of an example of how well it works.

You don't want to use sandpaper or steel wool or wadded up aluminum foil to clean the rust off of your bumpers. Chrome is just a super thin layer over nickel plating, and the nickel gives it the silver color, chrome is almost transparent. Sure you can shine up a piece of metal with steel wool or whatever, but you're using an abrasive that will take the chrome off and will ruin the plating forever. I have a feeling you'll have a dull spot on your bumper where you used the sandpaper once you polish the bumper properly.

Here's another picture I found as an example.

I'm sure a bunch of people will chime in about how they've used steel wool or seen someone use it and it works fine. It does not and they are wrong. I think you could get some really nice results if you polish these bumpers carefully.

Thanks for the plug on the Turbo Cut! We also have a complete system for metal polishing including an impregnated cotton Metal Polish and our Metal Renew liquid polish. We also have our Power Seal to seal your polished metals. Give me a ring at the office for Wizards Products 800-356-7223 or check out the website and coupon code for HAMBers in my signature.

"Back in the Day" (yes...I WAS there) lots of us had what we called "Polish Chrome" bumpers... the chrome was shot but silver paint (in many cases aluminum paint) was better than nothing.

There's even a pretty good aerosol "chrome" paint on the market... looks great at 10'.

Losing a bumper would get you a fix-it ticket in Wisconsin.
