Like the look of the painted center grille and small SS band around the edge on some 32 Ford. Do you buy one that has steel vertical rods or just paint over the stainless steel? Can't find one that has plain steel vertical rods.
Lightly sand blast the stainless. Prime, and paint. You really need to sand blast it, its hard to just sand and prep all those stainless bars. The less material, the better. A heavy primer will only make it easier to chip.... Use an epoxy sealer like ppg-DP90 (no sand sealer) then paint and clear, or single stage epoxy paint.
I have never seen a raw steel insert. But if there is one, the process would be the same. You might call the manufacture of a stainless grill and see if you can get it unpolished, might save some money.
Hey this is perfect! I'm wanting to paint my '32 grill too - trying to figure out how to do it. My plan is to cover the surround and crank hole trim with tape and carefully, with a knife, split the tape between the grill bars so the surround is completely covered and leaving only the grill bars and the two cross bars exposed. This thing will just fit inside my blast cabinet (one end at a time) where I can give the shiny a good blast. Next hit the thing with a good primer and clear coat or paint it. I'm thinking a dark gray is the color for this...
I send my inserts to a shop in CA for powder paint. Do the bars in a Satin Black. I've done several and they hold up better than paint in this country, To much sand on the roads and paint just doesn't last. If I remember right about 100 per insert.
