Painters That Did Great Graphics

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by xhotrodder, Feb 1, 2010.

  1. Those Youngblood Funny 'faces' are/ were so good. I used to enjoy the touring U.S funnys and the bodies that wound up here, with their cool graphic grilles etc.

In my opinion, Don Prudhomme was/is good with graphics/painting. This is something he is generally not known for.

But all the decent graphics and paint pretty much evaporated after say 83/84 because no-one has any creativity now. This goes for pretty much everything, not just cars.

  5. In 1969 at the age of 18 fresh out of high school I went to work for Bill Carter in the San Fernando Valley. I use to strip & sand cars getting them ready for paint.
As I remember Bill was dark headed with a full beard. Nice guy to work for.
At closing time everyone would go home except for Bill. He would close shop & get to working on the car in the booth. When I returned back to work in the morning I would see another work of art by Bill. (He always did his best work at night)
Bill also had a guy working with him that did awesome pin strping & writings on the windows, things like "Love Machine"
I was inspired by Bill & his work, but never got the chance again until I was 50.
At 50 I built my own ride & had to learn to weld, do body work & paint. Now I do it for friends & family members. I enjoy building old school rods.
I would like to find Bill just to thank him for letting me get my hands wet & planting the seed.

  6. My vote is for Bob Thompson out of Riverside CA. Great lettering and characters. Remember Smokey the Bear on the green striped Nanook AA/FA radiator?
Haven't seen Bob for a while. Hope he's OK.

  7. Scott Sullivan is amazing. Love his work.

    Glad to see him here.

  8. Anyone out there know how to get ahold of Bill Carter?

Yes, some of the 'Grammar Queen's' need a boot to the crotch. Really, a qt. of strong coffee and a large bran muffin would do these guy's some good.

  14. I agree 100%. I wish he would post more on here. I have to say that he was the biggest influence on me as a young car builder. His stuff is phenominal. I would love to see him post more on his current projects.

  15. I did contact Bill Carter. He's still painting at 68 yrs old...Very Cool....

  16. I seen Bob at Pomona Swap Meet, a couple years ago. He's always on the hunt for the old magazines. My Dad worked with Bob on all of Nanooks paint schemes. (before it went over to Super Shops) The green & white flamed version, was my favorite. Here's a couple renderings Bob did, for my Dad to use for reference. [IMG]

When I saw the title before reading anything, I thought of Art Himsl first then Scott.

  18. I saw Bob at Bakersfield in November for the Hot Rod Reunion, and he's doing great. He was hanging with Tom Clark, another phenominal striper/graphics guy. He moved to Lake Havasu, Arizona but still gets back to California every once in awhile. Most people don't know that Bob was one the two guys on the old Miller's Outpost commercials. If you weren't from Southern California back in the '80s you might not know what I'm talking about.

Graphics are fun, tried my hand at it a few times. Coffin tank for a ridgid pan in the 70's. I have been thinking about getting the air brush out again. Rat Fink is one shot brush painted from a few years back.
