i have seen a bunch of times when people are doing flames they have these templates for the curves of them. are these something that can be purchased or are they something that are made by the individual painters ?
also i want to get some pinstripers brushes. i have been looking on pinstripers.com but i was wondering if this was the best site to buy them of if there is a better one somewhere. and are there any good "how to" books or is it just a matter or practicing ? i would like to learn to do this. but will probably end up making my wife learn she has a steadier hand and more patience then i do.

If I'm not mistaken the curved items you are talking about can be bought at most office supply stores(Staple,Office Depot). IF not there try a craft store. They use them to help with the curvature at the base of the flame.

Lavalee uses templates for his realistic flames,
when he wants a harder edge without going to the trouble of masking.

The most common styles are done by masking and filling.

For my 23 T I cut out a pattern using cardboard and taped it to the body and drew it on with a chalk pencil. The removed the template and taped the pattern. Fliped the template over for the other side. This method is probably just good for a small area.

I agree, Dick Blick is a good website. I use mack brushes 0 00 000. There's alot of good tech tips on the HAMB it's helped me out. Get a book Get some Ideas Get creative. The hardest part is getting the paint to run right. it just takes some practice.
