Guys, I have finished fabricating and welding togther a nice little trailer. For the fenders, I purchased some pre-made jobbers from a boat supply company called "overtons". Trimmed these to size and welded them on. These are galvanized (grinded off the galvanization before I welded them at the bottoms). I know paint doesnt stick well to galvanized steel/fenders, so, what I was going to do is sand then down with a fine grit disc, and them rub them down with "straight vinegar". I dont know where I learned of this - or heard this (probally my dad), but I seem to remember this old tale/trick being what worked (wiping the galvanized work down with vinegar before painting). Anyone also hear of this, or any other recommendations? Thanks, Pete
Having been around the paint business most of my life all the contractors I delt with on a daily basis used apple vinegar on galvanized gutters with good results,,,without, the paint was peeling in a short period of time. HRP
Applying acid in this case is a lot like wetting wood down before sanding to "raise the grain". Except acid actually eats the grain edges away to create the roughness. If you follow it up with a bunch of sanding you'll negate the effect. Good luck
Use a good quality self-etching primer, like this from Eastwood: http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=1116&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=self%2Cetch%2Cprimer
Overtons' is a great vendor, I bought a 12 gallon boat fuel tank from them last year to get a Jeep rolling. Free catalog, lots of neat stuff for hot rodders'. Fast shipping and reasonably priced.
