Having heard your backstory, I would re-do that thing in blatant mid 80s M/P guise, which is what is. Only better this time. Candy red & a good hand letter job, a tip of the hat to the previous owners if that's your wish.
Not a damn bit Hamb friendly, nor does it profess to be. Let it live in it's glory days, ya just can't parade it around on these pages. There's a lot of rich history in the M/P ranks, but most of it was post-Hamb.

    Seriously? It's a local 80's racer. And you're asking what you're asking...here.

Here's my take. You said the lettering isn't the way it was when it was "known" locally (notice I didn't say Famous). So aside from a few guys who recognise a Red Vette that was raced locally, it isn't very well known, nor does it really have a story to tell. Nor is it the way that some cats might remember it. I owned a car back in the 70's that a bunch of folks said "Hey wasn't that John's old race car?" - It was, and one day a freind hit it home for me with "****, it sure was ugly" - I re did the car after that, He was RIGHT. It wasn't a significant car and it was ****y looking - why was ai "saving" that look? As many have said, mid 80's stuff was not exactly the hey day for M/P, in fact the cl*** was pretty dead by then.

Having been the "caretaker" of a pretty famous race car on the other hand, I get not wanting to change stuff or do harm - but in this case I don't think it really matters. The era of it race days were just another day in the life of its journey. In the 70's I had a huge Afro, wore fringed leather vests over silk shirts, with knee high moccasins over my Levi's, and was a drummer for a living. But I'm not about to go and "Preserve" that look again - it was just the way we dressed in a band at the time, I wasn't "famous".

So, if you have pictures of the car in its prime AND it was really cool looking, maybe emulate that with a redo of the car. If it wasn't, then either do a tribute to the era (or preferably earlier) or any other style you may see fit. I just don't see this car as something that needs an exact preservation. And all these dudes that say it will only be original once and you can't go back etc. WELL - It isn't "Original" now! They sound like a bunch of Restorer's!

I vote paint it and lose the wheels. If it was only a local car with no "real historical significance" then time to make it your own

You own it. So OWN it.
If you want to pay homage, write em a letter they can hang on the wall.
If its your dad's old campaign car, sorry for the remarks, but he'll understand why you painted it.

I think its great the way it is, I prefer it to someone trying to make it look old and failing.Just my opinion.

Yep, your right, I didn't notice the tail, or the year. No trim, no painted cove either in that year.

I don't like red on my 'vettes...never did. I had a red 64 coupe and had it painted black as soon as I could..came out beautiful. A few years ago I bought an O/T 'vette in black with silver interior...loved it!
The history [?] means nothing to me and I really don't like lettering on my cars...It'd be sanded off and I'd spend a bundle of that money on a killer black paint job. If the red interior is really deluxe I'd keep it. If it pissed me off I'd spend another bundle on a killer black interior.

  16. Nothing reminds me of the awful eighties more, than centerline wheels.
As the history in this cars isn't real significant, I say do what you want.
Take lots of before pics if you change it, so you can show folks what the eighties did to it.
Someone may want to restore it to that look, after your done with it.

I got a little more feel for it's significance in your descriptions. Still more regional or local than something on a national scale. Makes me stand a little more firm on the idea of you making some new significance with it. I've always had the idea that the car's finish is the 1st thing that all will see and judge in casual observation. A radical refinish tied to that 291 screaming for mercy through 6.50 gears? You'll have to beat em away with a stick! I think all the seasoned fans and fellow racers who remember it will remember it that much better. "Man, ol so-n-so's car never looked so good". might feel better than "Hey I remember..." I'd bet a coffee there's not many early Vette C/MP cars running where you're at. Even if there was 1 more I'd want to be the best looking of the 2, not the oldest. You've already done that, yes?

Oh my God. It would be completely immoral and wrong of you to tell us that, and not post a picture after. C'mon now.

When I initially read this thread, I mistook that it was a racer from the 60's...hence my response. Now knowing it's a post disco era car... screw the ****ty paint! I'm with the guy's that said go wild : metalflake? candy? Firemist?

There were plenty of good things that happened automotively in the 80's - this car just isn't one of them. But more importantly, those AREN'T Centerlines! (which by the way came out in 1971, I went to school with the founders son and saw them before ANY of you LOL)

The first rule of show business is leave em wanting more ....... I'd hate to ruin the fantasy for you.

  25. This is an opinion thread, and I guess that do I have one of those. First let me say that it is a very cool car as it is. But if it were mine, this is what I would do. I wouldn't open the garage door with the centerlines on it. But I'm a 60s mag wheel kind of person. lol And Yes I would paint it,{ if money wasn't an issue.} I like the Kandies, Metalflakes etc. with No lettering. I would get rid of the L-88 hood scoop too. I only like them on 68 and newer Vettes. Then add a Straight axle, blow en, or Injected? { And now you just have me a dreaming! }lol But seriously, it's yours, So just do it your way! That's all that really matters. And ask your Question on a Corvette Site too, and see their opinions. lol This is a model I built in 1972 {and I'm still just dreaming } Ron... 010.jpg 003.jpg 014.jpg lol Thanks Ron...

It will go faster if you paint it,at least that is what we have been taught all these years,i would paint it just to see if the myth is really true. Harvey

  28. SORRY, See I don't even know anything about that style of wheel. lol mostly my rods were built in the 80s. But I never liked the 80s style even back then. I have always liked the steel and Mag wheels, but hay, that's just me. Ron...

I am still watching your posts. I have taken the time to read and LIKED everyone of them. I am in the for the long haul. Not only does this let me know about painting the car or not. I get to see how different tastes are on hot rods and cars in general are between everybody. There is a post in here to paint it purple, that will never happen, LOL, but that is the difference great part of making our cars ours. If you suggest something, that is why I am on here. KEEP IT COMING.
