Ok, I am getting closer to doing the paint on the car and building ideas sheet.

I found out I cannot afford to have the pot metal parts rechromed. So my idea now is to paint them with a satin black, also the anodized aluminum around the windshield, rear window, grill and headlamp doors.

So my question what product or method is best to etch the chrome enough for primer to grab????

Forget the primer. Use some PPG DP50LF...it's an epoxy...it sticks so well, it'll take a lot of elbow grease and steel wool to remove it.

Cleaning/etching the existing surface with phosphoric acid will help a lot with adhesion. Depending on who is selling it, phosphoric acid solution is available under different names; Metal-Prep, Metal Conditioner, Rust Converter, etc. To avoid problems be sure to follow the instructions. Some don't specify a final water rinse but in most cases I think it's worth the extra effort.

There are etching primers that contain a small amount of phosphoric acid. There are cases where those are worthwhile, but they are not equivalent to the separate cleaning/etching you really need in this case.

Although something less would probably get you by, I agree with the PPG epoxy recommendation.
