I'm sure many of you have been down this road. Any pointers or tips? [IMG]

Or send to the chromers to get de chromed. Chrome is pretty hard stuff and may be difficult to blast cleanly.

Try an oxalic acid treatment first, those Hollywood wheels are hard to come by and once you blast and paint them not worth much.

in my younger days did it and will tell everyone else don't . ruined a set of Keystone Kustoms as the acid ate the aluminum centers out and left me with a chrome shell for a turtle ... but I was using diluted HCL ( muratic acid ) instead of mag cleaner .

It can be done, but you cannot soak the wheels like you would for a full-steel rim. I've taken oxalic acid (wood bleach) and made a paste with water, using rubber gloves and a soft pot scrubber you can make a huge difference. Oxalic is much milder than HCL but it will still do a number on aluminum.

A bunch - problem is wheels need to be dismantled before plating in most cases, then of course fully polished and then plated, and finally reassembled. There is a wheel restorer in California that will restore the aluminum center/chrome rim wheels, I'll see if I can find the info.

I actually had a full set of 4 with spinners and all a while back that went to Bob B. certainly not perfect but very nice. Hard to come by even a pair, one of those wheels you see one of in a junk yard once in a while but there's usually just one and the center has a big chip out of it!

X2 - I've had a couple of sets of rusty wires sandblasted and powdercoated and they came out great. It's not necessary to remove all the old chrome. The sandblasting gives it enough tooth for the powdercoat to bond.
