Dam John, went and visited my painter yesterday and he is right there with you. Said I will paint it anything you want, but if it were me, I would go with a non metallic solid color, etc etc. Same reasons. So, maybe I should listen to those who know and been there done that.

I have to decide by monday. Now I dont know, I cant get that orangy/bronze color without metallic, at least the factory codes. So maybe a red/white top, or burgundy/white top. Yall help me here, throw some colors at me, non metallics. I LIKE shiny though, not flat or dull, and like the white top. I just wanted something different than everyone else (like the bronze), tired of the same old whites/reds/blues/greens, I have those on my daily cars.

Meanwhile, here is a few update pics, I visited yesterday. So yall saw how messed up my hood was underneath, he had spent hours working on it to make it right, I offered in the beginning to buy another hood, he said he could fix it. Well the more he dug, the worse it was, now he found a great condition hood for $100 and is buying it (no cost to me) because it will save him money in the end.

Here is the shaved hood from the previous a hole that worked on my car you all know about. Check this out. They tack welded a flimsy piece of metal underneath the hood, and filled the ornament hole with bondo, about an inch thick. Worthless.

That hood did look pretty bad, what with a the "sculpting" on the forward lip. Sometimes it's just better to get another one.
A light color will make your roof look taller and bigger. With a 2 dr sedan, you may not want that. A darker color on the roof will make it look smaller and lower. If you tu-tone, put the lighter color on the bottom. Or put Vicky trim on it and go dark / light / dark starting from the top.
    JMHO. :)

I'm amazed at the thickness of the bondo that you show. It does bring up my own fears that my car is the same condition. Sounds like you got a good deal that you have with a fixed price vs. hourly. I hope that when I do mine, I can get a fixed price too.

Todd, trim and smooth the edges up nice on that chunk of bondo and hang it from your rear view mirror. Good conversation starter. :)

54hotrod, I just wouldnt do it any other way. I just couldn't afford not knowing a price, and was concerned we would get half way through and the budget was shot. So I just told them up front to look, prod, poke, sand, feel, whatever, and give me a price and sign a contract for what your agreeing to do and lets both stick to our agreement. Some will (especially considering economy), and some wouldnt agree to this type of agreement. I talked to about 6 places on this go round, about half would do it that way, and half wouldnt. So there is hope for ya.

Hey the fun part will be showing pics of what it was, what it went through, and what it is when its finished, and let yall tell me what you think it cost. Well it may be fun unless everyone says it looks like a $1000 paintjob :)

Streetdreams, I am definitely going to do something with the bondo piece, thats why I brought it home. Maybe it should replace the fuzzy dice

Well after MUCH debate, we are testing some panels in this color, factory 57 chevy color. I will update how it goes and get pics when I see it. I really do like many of the burnt oranges I was looking at, but thinking this may be a more period correct look to the finish. We shall see.

IMO those 50s cars were meant to be tutones.

Somebody (??) talked me out of red/white - no regrets - I'm glad with the original cl***ic pea**** blue/colonial white I ended up with. But I was thinking seriously about a tutone brown/tan combo - I think it was offered on the '55 Fords.

Todd it looks like you got the right person to do your car this time, eh?

I think it will look good, cant wait to see a test panel done. For the interior, it will be the same as it is for now. All my $$$ went to this, will have to save pennies again to get the interior done. So, the interior is grey, not sure if it will look good or not. Guess it will have to for now :)

Well I spent some time at the body shop this weekend. I went in and pulled my dash back out after having it painted a year ago to match the interior. He offerered to paint the dash and all inside trim the same color as the car, so I decided I would do it. I plan to soon get the interior redone, so might as well.

We also sprayed some test paint. The cell phone pictures didnt come out showing it very well because it was pretty dark in there, but this was just a quick spray over primer to see the color. Putting a work light to it, its more burnt orange than displayed here, but I have not seen the color in the sun.

I am wanting to go with a milkshake color on the roof, so far Chrysler cool vanilla looks like a possibility. They are saying 7-10 days to be painted, which if like usual, that means 1-2 more months . But its getting done

Well its been kinda dragging along again, I guess thats just the way it is in the paint world. I lit a fire about a week ago and they have been on it since and said they are staying on it until completion. The "plan" is to paint it this weekend and start putting back together early next week.

Anywho here is some progress pics from yesterday. If yall remember what my trunk and hood lip looked like before this, its come a LONG way.

I'm liking that color more and more. Got a good feeling now it's going to turn out right. We'll have to lift a beer at the same time in different states and toast its' completion when done.

OK, gonna leave it up to Todd to set-up the time. Maybe when he takes his first ride in it taking it home. Hey, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere...:D

I, for one, over this side of the big pond, will certainly raise a gl*** to toast the finish of this saga. Perhaps the biggest thrill will be getting it back home under its own power and enjoying it once more. My 55 still has a long way to go. Ole Don, I would love to have mine like yours. Oh well, keep dreaming - it's only been four years.
    Regards
