Definitely at the very edge….. too much ?
    Food for thought/ discussion.
    Comes down to personal taste.

    Fun project to watch.
I suppose you can switch them back-and-forth depending on your mood.
Just for a taste of something different now and then.

  10. The issue is, the current shift knob is awesome! I like the concept of red/white solid color knobs, the clear handle on the glove box, and the translucent red shift knob. It is like the shift knob blends the idea of the knobs and the handle. (…your car of course, just an opinion from a stranger).

A LOT. will be waiting to see the new shift knob.

I have a modified 58 from the 1970's. It gets twice as much eyeball as any restored early Vette. Then some people ask, "When you going to restore it?". My answer is "As soon as I have 50 grand to make a trailer queen out of a really fun car to drive, so that would be never."

    As you were...

  15. Dang, I go away for the weekend and I come back and the coolness just keeps compounding! Those knobs look awesome Mark!

Do some people not realize that this place also covers traditional customs?

Where do you get your blanks for turning these out and do you use regular lathe bits?

so cool great call on the shift knob looks way better also noticed the insert between the shifter & ash tray. how much time do you have in making those knobs. I have a set of blue & white knobs in my 40 and have heard some negative comments but I like them

probably way more time than I should. I started on Friday morning. part of the problem was that while I had enough 1/4" white, the only red I had was 1/2" thick so I spent quite a while machining it to 1/4"
    IMG_8985.jpeg
at first I was just going to make dash knobs . I made em the same shape as the originals only a little bigger in diameter.

    IMG_9004.jpeg IMG_9002.jpeg

then once I put those on I decided to make knobs for the window cranks and blinker lever IMG_9009.jpeg IMG_9010.jpeg

then one of my buddies said, “you have to make a shift knob now, so, machine more red to 1/4” and glue it up and turn it on the lathe IMG_9013.jpeg IMG_9013.jpeg

I thought I was done, then I thought I should do the inside door handles, originally they were chrome balls but looked out of place. Also the shift plate that I had earlier replaced with a pc of red acrylic looked out of place. It is only about 1/8” thick so I hand sanded and hand polished it because I didn’t want to break it… IMG_9020.jpeg IMG_9023.jpeg IMG_9021.jpeg

so, it sounds like a lot of time, but I guess I have the better part of 5 days invested in these….

the blanks I made up by gluing strips of white and red together (acrylic solvent cement) then machined them on the lathe, yeah I just used a normal cutter there... then lots of sanding, to 1000 grit then polish IMG_8989.jpeg

Awesome My 8 year old grandson is sitting with me looking at and reading this thread. The only thing out of his mouth is cool…..cool….cool ,just like Grandpa!
Mark you might kill me but. A red that matches the vettes red paint would be Uber cool, also Corncobs idea of switching them out according to mood is neat idea.
I can see it at a car show “Hey Joe I’m going to show you theses candy striped knobs on this Vette” in the mean time Mark is changing over to original knobs, Joe isn’t going to let his buddy have anymore beer Ha Ha
