hey everyone, finally got the stuff i needed to finish my parking brake install. ive got the 52 F1 stock setup. new cables are in backing plates ( not connected to rear frame bracket yet), i also have new cable to go to handle in the cab. my question is how much slack should be in the cables? a friend showed me on an old MG he was workin on about 2 inches if i remember correctly. and he tied a not in one cable i guess to take out some slack. this didnt seem like the right thing to do, but ive never done it so i dont know. any other tips appreciated . thanks
How much slack kinda depends on how much travel your handle/lever provides. But I would say just enought to allow for wheel/suspension travel without appling the brakes is what you want. Most autoparts places will have a "Cable slack remover" Kind of a round thing with a J bolt with a nut to pull the cable into a U shape.
thanks, but im not 100% sure what you mean by this "just enought to allow for wheel/suspension travel without appling the brakes is what you want". forgive me for my ignorance. thanks again.
If you are using all stock F 1 parts mounted the stock way a 1/2 inch would be plenty where the handle cable meets the wheel cables. As I remember you have flex housings from the wheels to the frame and those will give you all the travel you need for wheel movement. You should be able to pull the lever/handle out about 2 inches before you get any resistance from the brakes starting to apply.
