I think caution would be the word of the day when steping out of the drivers side:eek:,,,And yeah,I know they were out before the car went up ! HRP

  13. We have six of these like in the first pic at work. We call them "stackers" and each one holds 22 cars. They are maybie 7-8 stories high and are fluid drives. Very old and very reliable. I think the company that manufactured them was called "park n stack" with its operations out of the trade center in New York(R.I.P.).

Yes Japan has those. There was one at the Holiday Inn in Mito Japan where I stay. You can hear the thing going all night when people pick up there cars.

I think that lot is on 44th st between 8th & 9th aves in NYC. I think it's still there. I used to park at a lot that looks just like it in the '80's and 90's when I worked for RCA Records.
Al, thanks for starting this thread, these are some terrific pics.

I believe the VW facility is storage for new car inventory at one of the factories. Cars go thee before being shipped to dealers. It is all automated and the orders come in via internet.

I am pretty sure that Washington DC is trying an updated version of this type of parking, infact I am pretty sure that Upscale condos and apartments have these too! By the time that you type the code in an elevator your car is being retrieved and will be waiting when you get to ground floor. I think it's pretty cool.

  27. Could be...???

I've found footage of one like this in that was in Tacoma Washington from the 40s on my DVD of the 1937 film called "SPEED" with Jimmy Stewart!.

Help... I can't find my car... all the parking looks the same...!

    Berwynns version of "Vertical Parking"...!

The sadest day of Wayne and Garth fans is when they tore down that spire...!

Once rented an old warehouse that was an Edsel Dealership and I had an "Otis" freight elevator to bring the cars to the second floor work bays.

Sorry fo "Jacking" the threads all around... apparently I've been experimenting with my multi-thread editing skills and medications!

There are still some of those around NYC in some form or another. Also most of the indoor garages use some seriously old elevators and are on about every other block.

On another note I used to have a job where I would go to different old parking garages and you would be blown away what is stored in them. Sometimes there would be entire floors with maybe 50 or so collector cars just covered in either dust or old covers. There is one garage that has to have about 20 vintage Rolls Royces just sitting covered in dirt as if they were just left there. I have seen everything from a 1968 SS Impala,Vettes, Lambos, Astons, to 20-30's old iron. All run down and kind of looking as if they were abandoned.

Makes you wonder at about $300 a month per spot who is footing the bill.
